June 19: Portland Timbers vs. Minnesota Thunder in a non-Thirsty Thursday match

June 18, 2009 by Dave Knows 2 Comments

TimbersEvery weekend should start with a Timbers match!

Back when Thirsty Thursdays only happened a few times a season, I could rationalize putting up with a hangover at work the next day, or even calling in “sick” with the brown bottle flu, but now about half the matches are Thirsty Thursdays; these are the matches at which I’m the mellowest.

This Friday, however the Timbers host the Minnesota Thunder at 8pm (game will be broadcast on Fox Soccer Channel). That gives me plenty of time to percolate from the downtown office up to West Burnside and the Bitter End to practice the songs and drink with the Army before heading into the heralded halls of The Piggie. And this Friday is the Teddy Bear Toss and post game fireworks!

Gah, but all for nought! I’m heading out of town for the weekend Friday, and will miss this most delicious game. Sigh. Drink an over priced beer for me!

The Timbers are undefeated in the past 13 matches (10 league) and have only one draw at home this season. This is a good Timbers team. I’m not ready to say they’re as good as the 2004 team, which scored goals by the half dozen on more than one occasion, but this team scores goals when we need them, which is refreshing to the fans, and indicates some steely nerves and good coaching (there, I said it! Gavin’s doing a good job this season!).

The two coolest things I learned about Portland today

June 15, 2009 by Dave Knows 2 Comments

At Beer and Sci Fi I learned about Portland plumber Dean Pottle, who runs a micro-brewpub in his basement.

Dean’s Scene is one of Portland’s best beer culture offerings, and most people miss it entirely. So, why is it one of the best places in Portland to drink a beer? It’s a top-secret, underground speakeasy for beer drinkers!

OurPDX reveals that back in 1953 . . .

[A] ski jump was built at Civic Stadium, and at its highest point was 47 meters (154 feet) above the field. Four “ice powder machines” cranked out 200 tons of artificial snow, which lasted all week despite some classic Rose Festival weather: warm rain during the evenings.

Camping close to town: Camp Creek

Update: Heather’s (no doubt more entertaining) account is available at Mile73.com: Tank Full of Gas, Chapter 15: Camp Creek, OR

We got out of town this past weekend to avoid the annual naked bike ride. Well, not really, but last year the ride disturbed our sleep (who knew naked people on bikes could be so loud?) and Heather doesn’t have a bike anyway.

The forecast called for possible thunderstorms Friday, and 20-30% chance of rain through the weekend, but foul weather couldn’t deter Heather us. As per tradition we left Portland about 4pm Friday. We weren’t in a rush, however, as we reserved a campsite in advance. I know! Crazy! Where’s the fun in that?!

  • Portland Underground Film Festival (PUFF) – at the Clinton Street Theatre, June 11th – June 14th , 2009.
