Review: Milk Carton Boat Race 2009

June 8, 2009 by Dave Knows 4 Comments

Boat RaceAfter years of anticipation, I finally made it to my first Rose Festival Milk Carton Boat Race. And to be frank, I was a little disappointed. For one thing, there was no beer garden. Now I suppose this could be because the event is family friendly, and the Dairy Farmers of Oregon, who sponsored the event this year, are more interested in pushing milk than beer. I understand this. But we’re in Oregon, after all: family friendly and beer soaked are not mutually exclusive. So, if the organizers of next year’s event read this, I have two words for you: Beer Garden.

Also, I was hoping for more thrills and spills, as it were. We only saw one boat disintegrate all day, and though many rafts appeared to be always on the verge of tipping over, we didn’t see it happen even once. A large part of why there were so few tipped over and disintegrating boats (which used to be a much larger part of the event, if I can trust my memory of the television coverage I saw in my childhood), is that most of the boats were made with plastic milk jugs, not cartons. There were two or three purists, but the majority of boats were made with rafts of gallon milk jugs duct-taped together. It’s much more difficult to reseal cartons air tight than milk jugs. If more boats had been made with cartons we’d have seen more boats slowly sink as their pilot furiously paddled in a comic manner. Way more fun!

But, all in all, it was a fantastic event, and we had a fantastic time. We packed a picnic lunch, partook of a free root beer float (which must have been the first one I’d enjoyed in 20 years), took lots of pictures, and grabbed a beer at Oaks Bottom Pub after the festivities.

June 4-7: Timbers, Anarchist books, and a Milk Carton Boat Race

June 4, 2009 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

TimbersPractice your French and watch the The Portland Timbers take on the Montreal Impact at PGE Park this Thirsty Thursday at 7pm.

The Timbers beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-0 last Saturday, and then demolished the young Club America Reserves 4-1 Sunday in a friendly. The Mighty Mighty Timbers are unbeaten in the last 7 games, Montreal in the last 3. Something has got to give. I don’t think it’ll be the Timbers. The team’s offensive strategy this year actually results in goals.

bookfairflier200Anarchists are selling books Saturday and Sunday, June 6 and 7 at Liberty Hall (311 N Ivy). The sale runs from 10am-6pm on Saturday, and 10am-4pm Sunday.

The Axiom Collective is hosting the first annual Portland Anarchist Book Fair. This two day event will feature over 20 booksellers, publishers, and zinesters offering a wide range of radical literature and art. There will be over a dozen workshops, cheap eats from the Red and Black Cafe, a rad raffle, and more!

A list of participating organizations and booksellers can be found on the Axiom Collective’s Myspace page.

Milk Carton Regatta 09And then Sunday, June 7th at 11am join the hoards descending upon the banks of Westmoreland Park‘s casting pond to witness the spectacle known as the Milk Carton Boat Race.

I’ve been looking forward to the return of this Rose Festival tradition for years, and it is finally here. See you Sunday!

And speaking of the Rose Festival, Saturday the Grand Floral Parade takes place, so if you’re out and about, be wary of traffic and closed streets. Also all weekend long the Dragon Boats are racing in the Willamette.

New York Press writer attempts to eviscerate the Stumptown Coffee mystique

June 3, 2009 by Dave Knows 7 Comments

I like to support local businesses, but at the same time I maintain certain standards. Stumptown Coffee Roasters, doesn’t always meet them (and I know that puts me in the minority here in Portland).

It’s clear from Ethan Epstein’s New York Press article Totally Stumped, that he’s not a huge fan of Stumptown either. But for him it’s not just about the french press coffee. He begins:

Wake up, New York! You’re supposed to be the city that doesn’t take any bullshit, the city that chews up the phonies and spits ‘em out! Are you really going to be bamboozled by a bunch of pseudo-hipsters from Portland, Oregon? Are you really going to fall for Stumptown Coffee?

In the article he takes on several aspects of Stumptown’s mythology, including an insightful look at the company’s professed hatred of Starbucks:

Stumptown shouldn’t be mistaken for the bohemian paradise that its owner and his legions of promoters and sycophants would have you believe. Like Starbucks, the company it professes to abhor, Stumptown provides a ready-made, generic bohemianism, one where people know exactly what to expect. Stumptown’s current strategy is essentially a retread of Starbucks’ corporate model from more than a decade ago.

The article’s description of Portland’s geography and demographics is laughably wrong (or intentionally exaggerated?), and like the rest of the article it’s delivered rather flippantly.

Arguments, only partly convincing, are made about Free Trade. The piece also investigates whether Stumptown’s coffee is really as good as advertised.

In any case the article is entertaining and thought provoking, even if you don’t agree with half of what it says.

Update – a couple more perspectives:

Good luck crossing the river – Rose Festival Fleet week begins today

June 3, 2009 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

UPDATE: click HERE for 2010 Rose Festival Fleet Week Information!

2009-web-logo-redThe Rose Festival is blooming.

The Rose Festival excitement today and tomorrow is the arrival of boats from the United States Navy and Coast Guard, and the Canadian Maritime Forces – it’s Fleet Week, though I prefer to call it the Raising and Lowering of the Bridges since the fun part is waiting for the bridges (Broadway, Steel, Burnside and Morrison) to be raised and lowered so you can cross the river. Fun! Here are the arrival times:

  • Wednesday, June 3, 3-4 p.m.
  • Thursday, June 4, 3-6:30 p.m.

If you’re lucky you’ll be on the bus or MAX when this favorite Rose Festival event begins. Trimet has the details.

And check out the Oregonlive commuting blog, Hard Drive. Joseph Rose shares The secrets to getting around the Rose Fleet traffic jams.

The best option, in my opinion, is to get out of town during this whole mess known as the Rose Festival.

But, alas, that is not an option for everyone (myself included). For additional sage advice check out last year’s post: A savvy Portlander’s Rose Festival Tips.

Checking my website stats this morning I found this rather amusing juxtaposition of recent referrals:
