July 10-12: Puckerfest, the Timbers in Texas, and a Wax Broker Riot

July 9, 2009 by Dave Leave a Comment

The Mississippi Street Fair and a pair of Bastille Day festivals would be plenty for a normal weekend, but this is not a normal weekend.

This is going to be a hell of a weekend.

Belmont StationLike your beers tart? The Belmont Station is kicking off Puckerfest, a Celebration of Sour Beers at 6pm on Friday, July 10. Double Mountain brewer Matt Swihart will be tapping kegs of his Devils Kriek (made with Bing Cherries) and Rainier Kriek (Rainier Cherries). The cherries are from his own orchard and he will have some of the fresh fruit available to taste with the beers. Watch the Belmont Station website for additional sour beer events – the fest runs until the 16th.

TimbersFriday the Timbers travel to Texas for the first time since 2003, where they’ll be facing the expansion Austin Aztex.

The match will be broadcast at 5:30pm on USLLive, and will be shown at the following local venues:

  • Rogue Distillery & Public House (1339 NW Flanders)
  • All Ages: Beulahland (118 NE 28th Ave)
  • Cheerful Bullpen (1730 SW Taylor)
  • St. John’s Theater & Pub (8203 N. Ivanhoe St)

For more information, changed venues, and new venues visit this thread on the Soccer City USA Message Board.

WBRJulyIn the evening Saturday, July 11th (after the Timbers match or the Mississippi Street Fair!) head over to It’s A Beautiful Pizza (3342 SE Belmont) for the latest Hall of Records sponsored Wax Broker Riot, a social, collective environment to listen and discover both new and old vinyl.

This edition of the riot will be taking place on the back patio. Enjoy the summer evening while you dig for records (mainly soul, funk, jazz and breaks from the 60s and 70s) and enjoy a beer. The party is true to the (eventual) Hall of Records store concept: blending records with beer.

July 11: Mississippi Street Fair 2009

Update: Click Here for 2010 Mississippi Street Fair

mississippi2009fairThe Mississippi Street Fair is so much more than mango-ritas and heat stroke!

It’s my favorite Portland street fair. It’s compact, only five blocks from Skidmore to Fremont, so you’re guaranteed to run into your friends. “Grandfather” Leonard Smith’s BBQ Rib-Off contest is unique to the festival, and this year the organizers have added a Beer and Margarita garden, featuring craft beer tasting. There are three music stages and a dance stage, with performances all day. A children’s parade starts at noon at Beech Street. Almost all the local businesses will not only be open, but bursting onto the sidewalk and street with displays and additional seating in front of their locations. Read my post about last year’s street fair to see how much fun it is: Mississippi Avenue Street Fair 2008.

Traditionally my friends and I have ended up at the Crow Bar, sitting in the sun (i.e. burning in the sun), enjoying too many mango-ritas. But this year, though my friends may continue the tradition, I will be spending most of the fair with Mile73.com‘s Heather, helping her out at her craft booth! Yep, Heather will be selling her paintings (some samples here, and here, and here) and some of her sister’s jewelry at the fair. Her booth assignment is between Beech and Failing. We’ll be there all day, so come say hi (and buy some paintings)! Here’s the awesome Crafty Smackdown logo Heather created for her street fair art sales:

le 11 juillet: Deux Fêtes de la Bastille

July 8, 2009 by Dave Leave a Comment

Bastille Day isn’t really until le quatorze juillet, but this Saturday, July 11th Portland hosts two celebrations at which Portlanders can sip wine and practice French. And don’t worry: both celebrations will have jardins de bière!

Bastille DayCelebrate Bastille Day 2009 with the Alliance Française de Portland at Jamison Square Park Saturday from noon to 8:00pm. Some of the highlights include:

– Main stage entertainment acts, including Zephyr (French jazz); Carol Rossio (café jazz vocalist); Eric John Kaiser (Portland’s French troubadour); Ian Clemens (traditional music from Brittany), and others.

– French-style food and wine – everything from tasty chouquette pastries from St Honoré Boulangerie, croissants from La Provence, merguez sausage sandwiches, pommes frites and other French specialties from Fenouil Restaurant, pastries from Nuvrei, and more.

– The Jardin of Wine and Beer will feature la Metéor beer, extensive wine selections from Georges Duboeuf and even French panaché (a mixture of beer and imported French limonade). And more . . .

PixMeanwhile Pix Patisserie is throwing the Third Annual Bastille Day Celebration Block Party at the North Portland location (3901 D N. Williams).

Pix’s version of the celebration includes a Mini Médoc Marathon, the Tour de Portland Gastronomical Bicycle Scavenger Hunt, a Citroën Car Show, and a lot more (seriously – check out the Pix News and Events for a full listing of bands and activities).

ofb_logoThis year’s event also supports the Oregon Food Bank – for every nonperishable food item donated guests will receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win gift certificates to some of Portland’s best restaurants as well as culinary delights made right here in Oregon!

What are the top Portland podcasts?

July 8, 2009 by Dave 10 Comments

podcastlogoMy previous post got me thinking – I personally only know of three local podcasts:

  • Portland Sucks
  • Strange Love Live
  • 107 Report

What are other good Portland podcasts (not counting podcast versions of commercial radio programs)?

Any suggestions?

Thank you, listeners of the Portland Sucks podcast!

Last week the Portland Sucks podcast listeners were asked to send in lists of their top five Portland blogs. And on yesterday’s podcast the Portland Sucks host, Robert Wagner, announced the winners:

5. Red Cross PDX

4. Jack Bog’s Blog

3. Silicon Florist

2. Bike Portland

And the top blog of Portland Sucks listeners, and included on 88% of the submitted lists:

1. Dave Knows: Portland

So again, thank you Portland Sucks and the Portland Sucks audience!
