The Timbers face the Vancouver Whitecaps Thursday, August 6th at PGE Park. Kickoff is at 7pm.
The Whitecaps score a lot of goals (tied with the Timbers for the league lead at 28 goals, despite playing one fewer game), but also give up a lot of goals (24 to the Timbers 10) – so this should be an entertaining match. It is also an important match: the Timbers are unbeaten since their away opener at Vancouver in April, and can extend that streak to 19 matches with a win or tie. A win will be the Timbers’ 107th USL win.
The Timbers play again Saturday, August 8th when the Charleston Battery visit PGE Park.
Charleston has given up even fewer goals this season than the Timbers, but has scored far fewer (despite having former Timbers scorer Dizzy Dan Antoniuk on the roster). The Battery are currently at the top of the USL-1 standings. The Timbers trail by only two points (and have played two fewer games) so it’s possible a Timbers win Saturday will also mean first place. (Of course the Timbers play Thursday, Charleston plays Friday, and Carolina, who are tied with the Timbers in 2nd place play Wednesday and Saturday – so we won’t really know until the dust clears Saturday who’s on top).

I love it when the battle for first place has more variables than a 5th grade math problem.
