September 11-13: Muddy Boots, the Belmont Street Fair, and the Widmer Oktoberfest

September 8, 2009 by Dave Knows 4 Comments

This is going to be a hell of a weekend. The Timbers play twice, both Friday and Sunday, and in between there is no shortage of other activities to bide your time:

Muddy BootsThe Muddy Boots Organic Festival begins Friday with keynote address by Bill McKibben, author, environmentalist, etc. You’ll need tickets for this.

Then Saturday and Sunday, September 12 and 13th, visit the grounds of St. Philip Neri Church (2408 SE 16th Avenue) to find all sorts of “organic” activities:

  • Workshops and exhibits on sustainable living
  • Local and healthy organic foods and beverages
  • Organic beer and wine
  • Kids’ activities and entertainment
  • Musical entertainment: Music schedule just added! Click here or on the “Schedule” button to see the amazing bands playing at the festival this year!

belmontstreetfair09The Belmont Street Fair takes place Saturday, September 12 from 10am to 5pm. Come out to close-in SE Portland to enjoy the vendors, music, and entertainment along Belmont Street. The main stage is at 34th, around which you will find clusters of vendors.

Find the Crafty Smackdown booth to take a look at (and maybe even buy!) some of Heather‘s paintings and Allison’s hand crafted cards (visit Allison’s etsy shop, what have you, for a preview!).

Hall of Records have also secured a booth this year. Check out their crates full of delectable, soulful vinyl treats that you’ve come to expect and crave! They will be set up right near the main stage.

Widmer Oktoberfest
The 5th annual Widmer Oktoberfest takes place Saturday, September 12th in the gated lot adjacent to the brewery at 929 N. Russell Street.

Widmer’s beers, brats, sauerkraut, and pretzels are available, but that’s where the similarities to most Oktoberfests ends.

Bands playing throughout the day include the Quick & Easy Boys, Hillstomp, The Dimes, Sneakin’ Out, and Dr. Theopolis – not a whole lot of oom-pah, and I dare say no chicken dancing. Good beer though.

Art and Beer at the Portland Art Museum

September 4, 2009 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

artandbeer300Portland artist Eric Steen has a knack for combining his passions, no matter how incongruous the combinations might at first appear.

His blog, Beer and Sci-Fi, for example, combines discussion about beer, science fiction, utopian dreams, movies, and tall tales with activism and social art.

Some of Eric’s past art projects include Drinking Beer With Friends and Working for PICA’s 2008 Time Based Art’s Festival, and Good Beer = Good Times at Portland’s Igloo Gallery.

Eric’s latest project is Art & Beer at the Museum. Brewing good beer is an art form. The experience of tasting an especially interesting beer brewed by a creative brewer is akin to peering at an inspired painting or sculpture. Beer is best when enjoyed with friends. So why not combine all of these activities?

Portland-based artist, Eric Steen, presents an event that combines drinking beer and experiencing art. For one night only, you can sample three new beers from Laurelwood, Lompoc, and Lucky Lab at the Portland Art Museum. A brewer from each of the three Portland microbreweries received a tour of the museum’s collection, selected an artwork, and made a beer that will complement that artwork. This beer sampling is part of a one night event called “Shine A Light: A Night at the Museum”, an event that will host a number of performances, time-based art actions, music, and more. The entry fee for the event is $12 and will give you access to all the art and performances, the museums galleries, and unlimited sampling of the three new beers.

The event takes place Saturday, September 19th from 6pm to midnight at the Portland Art Museum (1219 SW Park).

Entry is $12 and includes access to all the Shine A Light: A Night at the Museum, the art collections and unlimited beer samples.

More details are available here and at Beer And Sci-Fi.

Portland Filmmaker Mike Vogel Funds his Bliss

September 3, 2009 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

mikevogel200Mike Vogel is working on another movie.

His last film, The Waiting List, a grownup movie about parenting, is making the film festival circuit now.

Mike has also written books and produced several short films (yeah, he’s one of those people, a creative person who actually produces a prodigious amount of creative stuff). And he is also the man responsible for this gem from last winter.

In a recent interview with Rockefeller Fellow and Peabody Award winning producer Dmae Roberts for her blog Funding Your Bliss, Mike talks about his current project, Did You Kiss Anyone?, and the creative way in which he is funding the production.

Everyone worked for “deferred payment” on my first feature, “The Waiting List.” So the second time around, I wanted to at least attempt to secure some sort of funding. After I wrote the script for “Did You Kiss Anyone?” I made a production schedule, budget, and a handsome PDF with headshot photos and charts and all that. But then it occurred to me that I don’t know one person who would drop $10,000 to be an equity investor in a feature, let alone ten or twenty people. But I know a handful of people who might donate $20 or $50, and so if I could target those people and the people they know, then maybe I’d have enough to cover basic production costs. But in order to get those contributors engaged, I wanted to give them something upfront, not just the promise of a movie I hadn’t shot. So, inspired by webisodes like “Wainy Days” and shows like “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” I outlined the first five episodes of “Did You Cast Anyone?” and started asking favors from actor friends.

Read the rest of the interview: Did You Find Funding Yet?

Watch the first webisode of Did You Cast Anyone? below, and catch the rest at Front Ave.
