September 17: Portland Timbers final match of regular season

September 15, 2009 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

timbers2009cupThe Portland Timbers have had quite a year.

The record for longest USL First Division unbeaten streak, at 24 games, was set by the Timbers this year, and a new club attendance record has been achieved with a match remaining. And in 2009 two trophies have been added to a historically sparse trophy case: the Cascadia and Commissioners Cups.

So despite the recent slump, this year’s team is the most successful Timbers USL team ever.

Thirsty Thursday, September 17th the Timbers play their final regular season match of the year, against the Cleveland City Stars. See you at PGE Park. Match starts at 7:15pm.

Pre-match meet up with Timbers supporters at the Cheerful Bullpen (1730 SW Taylor) or the Bitter End (1981 W Burnside) to enjoy a few pints and practice your chants.

Post-match make your way to Kelly’s Olympian (426 SW Washington) for the Timbers Army End of (Regular) Season Party, featuring: Rum Rebellion, Shock Troops, Brut Squad, and DJ Mattie Valentine. (21 and over.)

And get your playoff tickets soon – they may sell out!

Update: For 2011 information go here: El Grito y Fiestas Patrias 2011

El GritoEl Hispanic News is sponsoring the 4th Annual El Grito y Fiestas Patrias celebration Tuesday, September 15th at Pioneer Courthouse Square.

Entry is free and the party begins at 12 p.m. and continues until 10 p.m. In addition to folkloric and Aztec dancers and live mariachi, salsa, cumbia, and pop music, the event will include food and beverages for sale, community booths, vendors, and the Mexican tradition known as El Grito de Independencia.

El Grito y Fiestas Patrias celebrates the independence of Mexico and other Latin American countries from Spain. As Mexican President Felipe Calderón presents the nation’s traditional El Grito in Mexico City, so too will Portland commemorate Mexican independence in the same manner in Pioneer Courthouse Square, with a presentation of the revolutionary cry for independence, El Grito de Independencia, by Consul General Enrique A. Romero Cuevas at 9 p.m. Portland Mayor Sam Adams will also be on hand to proclaim September 15 as the “Day of El Grito y Fiestas Patrias Celebration” in the City of Portland.

Somehow I’ve missed the Belmont Street Fair until this year. But it’s a good one, I dare say my second favorite after Mississippi Avenue’s.
