If you ride TriMet you are familiar with the work of Literary Arts, even if you don’t attend any of the Portland Art & Lectures, or have experience with Writers in the Schools, or follow the Oregon Book Awards Author Tour. Literary Arts is the organization behind the Poetry in Motion campaign, which places poetry placards inside buses and MAX trains, mostly on the space above the windows that would otherwise display advertisements or TriMet admonitions against bad trimetiquette. Thousands of TriMet passengers see them every day. On many snail-paced commutes in an overcrowded bus, those poems have helped me preserve my sanity when I’ve forgotten my iPod.
And now, for the next installment of Poetry in Motion, Literary Arts is asking for our help selecting the poems.
Because of the incredible generosity of a host of supporters, we will add thousands of new poems to our Poetry in Motion program this April. But, we need your help in choosing the work. Please take the online survey and vote on which poems get chosen and installed on hundreds of TriMet buses and trains.
Visit the Poetry in Motion webpage for more information, and check out the archive of all the poetry cards from 1997 through 2007.
