A Tour of the Central Library Eco-Roof

February 21, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

During the summer of 2008, with grant money from the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and the City of Portland, an eco-roof was installed atop the Central Library (801 SW 10th Ave).

Eco-Roof

Constructed with living plants and simulating the processes that occur in nature, eco-roofs absorb rain water like a meadow in a natural setting.

Last January, the library began offering scheduled public tours. I wanted to check the roof out for myself, but every tour I attempted to sign up for was booked solid for weeks into the future, and eventually I just forgot about it.

I stumbled upon the library’s Eco-Roof tour page again recently, however, and as luck would have it there were a couple spots available (there are only 12 spaces available for each tour) for last Saturday’s morning tour.

The tour begins at the Welcome Desk in the foyer. We were late by a couple minutes so the security guard graciously took us up to the fifth floor in a service elevator where the rest of the tour group was already assembled. As the guide answered questions and expounded on the benefits of the eco-roof (much of the spiel is on this webpage), we snapped a few photos and enjoyed the views (Saturday was a beautiful day!)

February 20: Timbers Army Third Saturday

February 20, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Timbers ArmyThe February Timbers Army ‘Third Saturday’ is upon us. The Army will be invading upper Hawthorne, aka The Barmuda Triangle.

We will descend upon upper Hawthorne like alcohol starved locusts ready to decimate SE’s hops and barley crops!

The Barmuda Triangle is between 48th-50th and contains The Space Room, Bar of the Gods, Sewickly’s Addition, Mt. Tabor Pub, Sapphire Hotel, The Water Trough, The Tanker, and if you want to stretch your legs–Angelo’s!

This vortex of inebriation also holds in it’s depth Portland’s only late night Döner Kebabs! Cash only, Brian.

It will all kick off around 7:01 at The Space Room and then with true TA passion we will take control of the entire neighborhood!

Tell your friends, tell your enemies, warn your relatives and bondsmen! Let’s make this the biggest and most memorable Third Saturday ever!!

I would be seeing you all at the The Space Room (4800 SE Hawthorne) . . . if I weren’t going to a Mardi Gras party!

A Day in the Life of PDX.FM

February 18, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

pdx.fmThe inimitable Robert Wagner of PDX.FM and, of course, the Portland Sucks show, will be live blogging an average day at PDX.FM today, February 18th. In fact, he’s already started:

5:07AM – I wake up. See? It’s already exciting.

Why they hell would he do this? Is it a stunt?

Sure it is, but it’s also a response of sorts to the seemingly endless numbers of resumes that we receive on a daily basis now. As we move forward we think it’d be good for you to know exactly what you’d be getting yourself into. Working here sucks and our jobs are completely anti-fun – you’ll know the pain and agony of what we go through each and every day once you read the live blog, believe me. It’s hell. The walls are even painted red.

The blog will be updated until 5pm or so . . . you can follow along at: http://pdx.fm/liveblog/

February 18: Gems & Giants

February 18, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Gems & Giants Feb 18Seriously, I don’t know how they do it. The Hall of Records crew is spending long hours setting up shop on Belmont, and yet somehow they find time for Gems & Giants: Only the Finest in Soul and Funk.

The bi-monthly social therapy / weekend jump start commences at 7:30pm this Thursday, February 18, at the Jade Lounge (2342 SE Ankeny).

But I guess it makes some sense. They have to take a break occasionally, and this does sound like a nice way to relax:

Settling nicely back in to our big comfy Thursday chair, we continue our work bringing your ears their fix of all things funky and soulful while you get your stomach and head right from the Jade’s ridiculous Happy Hour Menu. Budget Party like whoa.

Change your clothes, call some friends and meet us after work for a drink or three.
