April 22, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Earth DayEarth Day 2010 Re-Seeding Our World takes place Saturday, April 24th from 10am to 7pm at the Washington High School Field at SE 12th and Stark.

Earth Day 2010 will be engaging all of Portland, especially the Buckman Neighborhood, in the annual Celebration of Localization. Earth Day is a project of City Repair and is proud to organize this event for the eleventh year in a row! This year’s theme, Re-Seeding Our World will focus on how we all can positively contribute to creating the world we want. A world with an infrastructure that is sustainable, community focused, empowering to its citizens, respectful of the natural world and provides places for people to gather.

This event features live music (including the March Fourth Marching Band), workshops, art, a bike parade (to the event from Laurelhurst Park, starting at 11:30am), and over 100 booths with representatives of various local organizations. The mayor is even scheduled to make an appearance.

Visit City Repair for more information, including entertainment and workshop schedules.

2010 Milk Carton Boat Races

April 22, 2010 by Dave Knows 4 Comments

Milk Carton Boat Races 2010The only Rose Festival affiliated event I get excited about is back again in 2010: the Milk Carton Boat Race!

Race day is June 13th (11am). The race takes place at the Westmoreland Park casting pond.

After a seven year hiatus the race I obsessed about as a kid returned last year. It did not quite live up to my imagination, but it was still a lot of fun. If you’re going as a spectator I recommend you read my review of last years event so you’ll know what to expect (e.g. no beer garden?!). Bring a blanket (or lawn chairs) and a picnic lunch and enjoy the spectacle.

If you want to participate there are two categories of boat you can choose from:

Racing class: designed for speed and consists of narrower and lighter frames

Showboat class: design is primary goal – does not race

There are four classes of racing boats: children, adults, family/multi-rider, and corporate. Deadline to register is June 9th at 11:59pm! Visit the event website for more information. Follow @MilkCartonBoat on Twitter for the latest news.

April 22: AC St Louis visits the Portland Timbers

April 21, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

AC St. Louis vs Timbers!AC St. Louis visits PGE Park to face the Portland Timbers this Thursday, April 22nd. Match kicks off at 7pm.

AC St. Louis is an expansion team in the NASL this year, and have started off their inaugural season, so far, with a whimper. The team lost 2-0 in their debut, at Carolina. And they were dropped in their home opener 2-1, by the Austin Aztex. Former Timber Luke Kreamalmeyer plays in the midfield for AC St. Louis. (Visit Dropping Timber for a more thorough game preview!)

The match will be the first Thirsty Thursday of the year, which means cheaper beer (in smaller cups) during the match.

A Roundup of Area Distilleries

April 21, 2010 by Dave Knows 2 Comments

BoozeThe Portland Food and Drink Guide to Area Distilleries, by Cuisine Bonne Femme, was published yesterday at Portland Food and Drink. I recommend you read it.

Oregon boasts over a dozen distilleries, with at least eight in Portland. The city even has its own “distillery row”, a small area of Southeast Portland near downtown. Some are new and tiny, only producing a few cases of any spirit at a time, while others are internationally known and distributed.

Find out a bit about (almost) every distillery on Distillery Row, plus Artisan Spirits, Clear Creek (Clear Creek’s Stephen McCarthy was also recently interviewed on Savor PDX), and a couple breweries that have gotten into the booze business too (I also recommend this comprehensive review of Rogue’s spirits at local booze blog Drink Spirits).
