Portland Sucks RIP 2008-2010

May 6, 2010 by Dave Knows 5 Comments

PDX SucksSadly, Portland Sucks, has nearly run its course. The final show airs Friday, May 7th 2010 (live at 8am on PDX.fm!)

Portland Sucks debuted as a blog back in 2008. On January 29th, 2009 a weekly internet radio show was launched under the moniker, hosted by Robert Wagner and Sabrina Miller. The show drew enough interest after only two weeks that they decided to make it a daily show, and since then it has aired almost every weekday morning at 8am.

There are tons of great shows on PDX.fm and PDX.am, but Portland Sucks is/was my favorite, and has provided some epic rants and entertainment in its year and a half run. The show also holds some special memories for me. Last July the show’s listeners picked my humble blog as their favorite Portland blog! And in February, after literally weeks of polite invites, wrangling, and finally kidnapping threats 😉 from Robert and Sabrina, I made my radio debut second radio appearance ever as a guest on Portland Sucks episode 229.

So on behalf of all Portland Sucks fans, I want to thank Robert and Sabrina for a thoroughly entertaining show and congratulate them on a fantastic run!

Robert is being coy about his future radio presence, but no doubt announcements will be made soon (perhaps during the final show?). You can continue to hear Sabrina on multiple PDX.fm programs: Convention Crashers, the Nerd Report, iPhoneSlutz, and soon, iPadSlutz!

The Portland Sucks archive will remain online at www.pdxsucks.com until June 1st, so get them while you can!

May 6: 7th Planet Picture Show presents Garbage Pail Kids

May 5, 2010 by Dave Knows 2 Comments

Garbage Pail KidsPortland’s answer to MST3K, the 7th Planet Picture Show, takes place at 7pm this Thursday, May 6th at Mount Tabor Theater (4811 SE Hawthorne).

Host Will Radik will be joined by Robert Wagner of PDX.fm to talk over an awful, awful film:

Garbage Pail Kids (1987)
Seven disgusting kids but nevertheless of interesting personality are being made of the green mud coming out of garbage can. Once alive their master gives them rules to obey although they think that life is funnier without following stupid regulations like no television or no candy. Naturally this will cause some conflicts.

Show is free, but there’s an entirely optional suggested donation of $5. 21 and over only, there’s a bar!

St Johns BizarreThe St. Johns Bizarre street fair takes place Saturday, May 8th from 10am to 6pm in downtown St. Johns.

2010 will officially mark The St. Johns Bizarre fourth year of creating a community forum of neighbors and friends coming together to celebrate our community. . . The Bizarre is a showcase of the unique and eclectic character of North Portland. Included is local music, street performers, a vendor’s market, sausage, pizza, a Bier Garten, kids art activities, and a close proximity to all the wonderful business located in the St. Johns town center.

The festival kicks off with a parade, featuring Mayor Sam Adams on a float! About 65 venders will be offering every kind of craft you can imagine. Live music is scheduled all day, featuring performances by Sam Densmore (Silverhawk), Michael Hurley, Lewi Longmire Band, Pierced Arrows (ex-Dead Moon), and Explode Into Colors.

And check out The Sentinel’s interview with Ian Youngstrom, the music coordinator of the Bizarre.

But most importantly, there is a Bier Garten (featuring beers from Lompoc brewery, Ninkasi, and Silver Moon), and food vendors!

More information is available at the website and facebook page.

May 7: The Cort and Fatboy Midnight Movie presents The Big Lebowski

May 4, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

LebowskiCelebrate the 5th anniversary of el Cinco de Lebowski this Friday, May 7th, with the Cort and Fatboy Midnight Movie for May: The Big Lebowski.

I know many were worried that when we got fired, that the Lebowski fun would disappear with our corporate paychecks. But the Dude Abides, and so do we. However – lack of corporate conglomerates assuming liability means there will be no free attendance via bathrobe, and no March of the Lebowskis this year.

HOWEVER – the screening will be preceded by live music, a band will greet you at the door with fabulous funk, attendance is STILL only 3 bucks (as opposed to other festivals that goldbricked their ass to town last year and charged 5 times that much to watch the exact same film print) and as incentive to keep you coming in costume, a contest will be held, with the finest costumed fashions winning quality swag from our sponsors.

The doors of the Bagdad (3702 SE Hawthorne) open at 9pm, contest begins at 10:45pm, and film begins at 11pm. Admission is only $3, and you have to be 21 or over.
