May 8: Guilds Lake Courts

May 7, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Guild'sThe Architectural Heritage Center invites you to learn some little known Portland history: Guilds Lake Courts: an Impermanent Housing Project.

Guild’s Lake Courts in Northwest Portland was designed as temporary worker housing for the steel and shipyard industries during the Second World War. When constructed in 1942, it was one of the largest housing projects in the United States. The massive development consisted of 2,432 units of housing, five community buildings, five childcare centers, a grade school, and a fire station. The population of the community peaked in January, 1945 at 10,000. Many of the residents were children from across the U.S. and 20 percent of the population were African Americans who had relocated to Portland from the South. During its short existence, the community underwent three rapid evolutions before being demolished in 1951.

The lecture, by historian Tanya Lyn March, takes place Saturday, May 8th from 10am to 11:30am. She interviewed 30 former residents of the former housing project for her PhD dissertation. For more information visit the AHC website.

TimbersNo matches this week (home or away), but BANG, next Thursday, May 13th commences a home stand in which the Timbers play three times in seven days. So yeah, we’ll have plenty of match reports for you next week.

We’ll start off with the Ryan Pore news:

The midfielder has scored six goals in the Timbers’ first four games and leads the USSF Division-2 Pro League in goals scored, points and shots. His hot start has powered the Timbers to three wins and one tie and first place in the USL Conference. [more]

PORE-LAND TIMBERS by Thomas King at Portland Sportsman

How good has Ryan been this season? How about having a hand (a foot? a head?) in every goal the team has scored? How about leaping out of a crowd to put an impossible header just inside the far post to win a game in the 87th minute? Or scoring in four straight tilts? If anyone wondered whether Ryan Pore was ready for a starting role in Portland’s MLS squad, their doubts must certainly be dissipating. [more]

Pore named USSF D-2 Pro League Player of the Month at PortlandTimbers.com

PORTLAND, Ore. – U.S. Soccer announced today that Portland Timbers midfielder Ryan Pore was voted the USSF Division-2 Professional League April Player of the Month. He recorded six goals and one assist in the Timbers’ opening four games of the 2010 season. [more]

The Scottish Highland village of Carrbridge visits Portland

May 7, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

As part of a delegation from the Scottish village of Carrbridge, home of the annual World Porridge Making Championship, filmmaker Fergus Thom visited Portland recently to meet Bob Moore of Bob’s Red Mill fame, and to take a look behind the scenes of the company’s giant milling operations.

The visit also included some Portland area sight seeing, which Fergus captured in the short film below (set to music by Portland’s own MarchFourth Marching Band):

For more videos, photos, and information, visit Carrbridge Films: The American Adventure: Portland & Oregon, January 2010.

Carrbridge Films is an independent, entirely youth-run, film company based in Carrbridge, a small village in the heart of the Highlands of Scotland, Cairngorm National Park. You can find them on YouTube, flickr, Twitter, and Facebook.

May 6, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

The 2009 winner, as you may recall, was Matthew Cox of Oregon based Bob’s Red Mill. And until the next competition, you can visit the actual Golden Spurtle – it’s on display at Bob’s Red Mill Whole Grain Store (5000 SE International Way, Milwaukie, Oregon). Truly, it is a sight to behold!

Recently while perusing the recently revamped Golden Spurtle website, I found this short film (by Fergus Thom of Carrbridge Films) about the 2009 competition, which features competition footage and the awards ceremony:
