May 10, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Update: First episode podcast is available (will be on iTunes soon), and Stumptown Magazine has a recap!

Morning SubmissionNew PDX.fm show Morning Submission takes over where Portland Sucks left off last Friday. It debuts Monday May 10th, at 8am!

May 16: Northeast Sunday Parkways (first of 2010!)

Sunday ParkwaysThe first Sunday Parkways of 2010 takes place Sunday, May 16th in Northeast Portland.

A Portland Sunday Parkway is an opportunity to spend a pleasant summery Sunday morning and afternoon (10am to 3pm) winding your way on bike or foot through mostly residential streets free of car traffic. The routes take you from one park to the next, where you can check out the vendors and demonstrations, or just sit down and relax. For the Northeast event, the parks include Wilshire, Alberta, Woodlawn, and Fernhill.

Heather and I have participated in two Portland Sunday Parkways – we walked the very first one in North Portland in 2008, and last year we rode bikes in the Southeast Portland event. We highly recommend participating.

May 15: Alberta Art Hop 2010

Art Hop 2010The Alberta Art Hop, Art on Alberta‘s day-log celebration, takes place this Saturday, May 15th. The theme of the 11th annual event is ABC: Art Builds Community.

From 11am to 6pm over 15 blocks of NE Alberta will be closed to car traffic. The street fair that ensues includes over 150 artists, craftspeople, music, dance and theater performances.

For Art Hop 2010, we plan to have several murals painted and displayed at multiple venues along NE Alberta Street. AoA is partnering with the neighborhood nonprofit organization Community Energy Project. We have also chosen artist/muralist, Rodolfo Serna, who will work with local schools and youth organizations to design murals to be painted by those parties, as well as the attending public, on Art Hop day. All murals will be painted on plywood and mounted later to building walls with the help of another NE Alberta Street nonprofit organization, Oregon Tradeswomen.

National Train Day 2010

May 8, 2010 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

Again this year the star attraction at the Portland celebration of National Train Day was the SP 4449, which used to pull the Southern Pacific Coast Daylight coaches from LA to Portland. It’s one of three locomotives owned by the city of Portland (visit the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation website for more information about the other locomotives and learn about the foundation’s efforts to build a permanent home for these historical locomotives and other rolling stock).

Also, like last year, the weather was gorgeous.

Beautiful Day at Union Station

Heather abandoned me this weekend, so I was traveling solo, armed only with my iPhone for taking photos. So unfortunately I did not get any decent ones of the displays and activities inside Union Station. However, there was plenty to see outside.

Like tigers mauling children!

Free tiger maulings!

And trains and crowds.

And did I mention it was a beautiful day?

June 5: Tiny House Construction Workshop

May 8, 2010 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

Tiny HouseSome day I would like to own and live in a Tiny House. Heather and I are researching shipping container architecture, but cute traditional Tiny House cabins, like the one pictured to the right, are intriguing too.

I’d never really thought about building one myself though; I figured I’d let the Tiny House building experts, like the folks at tiny house construction company Portland Alternative Dwellings (POD), handle that.

And they will.

But they also will help you build your own tiny house, if that’s more your style. And their next one-day tiny house construction workshop is on June 5th, 2010 in Portland.

We’ll focus on basic tiny house construction with an emphasis on:

* House-to-Trailer Connection
* Stick-Framing and Construction Techniques
* Tool Use, Safety and Good Clean Fun

This is a hands-on workshop, where you’ll learn how to safely build a tiny house. We’ll construct the foundation and at least one wall of a twenty-foot little house. We’ll also discuss building materials, moisture control, ventilation, and other relevant tiny house issues. Dee’s house will be available to illustrate key building points and the finished product.

Visit the POD website for more information, including how to register.
