Match Day: Portland Timbers vs Crystal Palace Baltimore

May 13, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

TimbersCrystal Palace Baltimore make their PGE Park debut today, Thirsty Thursday, May 13, 2010, at 7pm. This is the team’s inaugural year in the first division team (well, technically USSF Division-2, but you know what I mean). Crystal Palace Baltimore played in the USL 2nd division from 2007-2009. This will be the first time they have faced the Timbers.

Former Timbers Chase Harrison and Takuro Nishimura are familiar faces on the Palace roster. The team is 0-3-1 on the year, but that draw came on the road against a tough Vancouver team last weekend.

And possibly today, Mandjou Keita will return to the field for the Timbers . . .

But that’s about all I know. These guys have a better handle on this matchup:

May 19: Back Fence PDX

May 12, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Back Fence PDXBack Fence PDX, Portland’s storytelling show, returns to the Mission Theater (1624 NW Glisan) Wednesday, May 19th.

So how exactly does this work? It’s like this:

Our Back Fence Storytelling event is the kissing cousin to San Francisco’s Porchlight Storytelling Series. It is an evening with seven people telling true, unmemorized ten-minute stories based on the month’s theme. The stories must not have been performed publicly prior to their Back Fence PDX telling.

At Your Service is the theme of the May show, and story tellers include Steve Almond, author of Rock and Roll Will Save Your Life; Eric Spitznagel, whose writing has appeared in Vanity Fair and Playboy; and Jillian Lauren, author of Some Girls: My Life in a Harem (who I had the privilege of interviewing for this blog).

Reservations are highly recommended. Doors open at 6pm for food and drink, show starts at 7:30. For more details visit the Back Fence PDX website.

Camping Close to Portland

May 12, 2010 by Dave Knows 3 Comments

Dorky DaveHeather and I go camping a lot. We enjoy campfires, an air mattress, and semi-wilderness, so we’re car campers (we need our cast iron pans, coolers full of beer and ice, and boxes of wine, so backpacking is out of the question).

Upon our return to civilization, one or both of us usually blogs about the trip, so we have a record, of sorts, of each campground, campsite, and campfire cooked meal we experienced. We usually note the weather (e.g. rain) and bugs too. I have collected brief reviews, and our accounts below. Hopefully these records of our experiences can help you find the perfect camping spot this summer!

Henry Rierson Spruce Run Campground, Clatsop County

Spruce Run is in the Coast Range, so it can be wet, especially early in the summer.  The campground does not take reservations, so get there early on Fridays.  Best campsites are those along the Nehalem River.

Green Canyon, Mt. Hood National Forest

We lucked out to find the last spot available at Green Canyon on our visit in 2008.  Right on the Salmon River, this campground is further off of Highway 26 than most in the area.

Camping close to town with no reservations *again*

Panther Creek, Washington

Panther Creek is a gem on the Washington side of the Gorge, not too far past Stevenson, home of Walking Man Brewery!   The campground is far off of any highway, and the sites are large.  The very friendly camp ranger gave us directions to nearby Panther Creek Falls, which you must see!

Jessie M. Honeyman State Park, Central Oregon Coast

One of my favorite campgrounds when I was kid, I was a bit disappointed with Honeyman last summer.  Mostly because it’s become almost exclusively an RV campground for ATVers.  Beautiful stretch of the coast though, and sand dunes!

Camp Creek, Mt. Hood National Forest

One of our favorite campground on Mt. Hood.  Best and biggest spots are Camp Creek, which drowns out the Highway 26 roar a quarter mile away.  Some sites have Civilian Conservation Corps era fireplaces.

Moss Creek, Washington

This one disappointed us a little, as only a couple sites are near the creek.  Our stay featured dust, mosquitos, and shrill children.

Silver Falls State Park, Willamette Valley

We made an exploratory day trip to Silver Falls not too long ago.  We’re camping there this summer for the first time.  Perhaps a little too landscaped for my taste, but some amazing hikes featuring, duh, water falls!

World Cup 2010 Viewing in Portland

May 12, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

World Cup ViewingWhere will you be watching World Cup 2010 matches?

There are only a few bars in Portland that could be designated Soccer Bars. But during the World Cup, the list will expand, if only temporarily. Virtually all bars that have a TV will occasionally be tuned to world soccer this summer.

To find the right places to watch visit the new World Cup Viewing page at Portland Soccer Bars.

Tuesday Timbers Tidbits (05/11/2010)

Timbers v BocaThe big announcement Monday (besides the debut of the slick TV spot above) was that The Timbers will be hosting Boca Juniors at the end of the month. Wow, they promised a world famous club for a friendly; I think this qualifies! The match takes place Saturday, May 29th at 7pm. Tickets go on sale today at 10am (if you’re a season ticket holder, your Game B tickets will get you in).

But first we have a bunch of games that count. The Timbers play three league matches in less than a week, starting this Thursday, May 13th when new team Crystal Palace Baltimore makes their first visit to PGE Park. Saturday, May 15th AC St. Louis visits for their second time, and Montreal makes the trip on Wednesday, May 19th.

Make sure to tune into Feuerstein’s Fire Episode #9 at 11am today (Tuesday, May 11th) as the Timbers Army’s patriarch (and talented photographer and advertiser on this blog) Steven D. Lenhart talks with host Daniel Feuerstein about the Army and the Timbers on the threshold of MLS.

And your Timbers history lesson for today: Did you know that 1978 was the 2nd best year for the NASL Timbers? Timbers Army legend Drumman knows, and shares with us the story (and a piece from his collection of vintage Timbers ephemera) at his blog Throw Ins.
