Frontier Justice in Oregon, 1850-1997 is the theme of the History Pub on Monday, October 25 2010 at the Kennedy School Theater (5736 NE 33rd).
Drawing from the wealth of photographs and information discovered while researching her books, Necktie Parties and Murder, Morality and Madness, Diane Goeres-Gardner will present a dark but lively program fit for Halloween, about early-day justice in Oregon, from the first legal execution in 1850 and ending in 1997, when the last man was executed in Oregon. “Frontier Justice” uses individual cases to explore Oregon’s early history of legal incarceration and execution. Included are historical firsts: use of fingerprints, legal recycling, and use of electricity at an execution. Rare photos and discussion of two pioneering Portland institutions, the 1857 Oregon Penitentiary and the 1861 Hawthorne Insane Asylum, will be featured.
History Pub is a free event, but organizers ask you to bring a canned good donation for the Oregon Food Bank. The presentation goes from 7pm until 9pm, and all ages are welcome.
