LA Times On Urban Foraging with Portlander Rebecca Lerner

November 20, 2010 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

LA TimesPortland based journalist, blogger, and urban forager Rebecca Lerner is featured in Foraging is Green Eating at its Purest, an article by Cara Smusiak of NaturallySavvy.com, at LATimes.com.

When people think of eco-friendly foods, they often think of organic foods and family farms. But foraging for wild foods is perhaps the purest way to eat green.

Foraging is harvesting indigenous, wild plants and fungi, as well as fishing and hunting–it’s all about eating what the land provides.

Last May Lerner lived off foraged foods for a week and recorded her adventure on CultureChange.org. She explains:

foraging isn’t just about finding sustenance during emergencies. “At its core, wild food offers you a deeper way to explore your relationship to the land outside your door, to recognize the gifts Gaia (the Greek goddess of the Earth) has left for you.”

Portland Timbers Roundup (19-November-2010)

TimbersSupporter news

From The Terraces: Cascadia Derby Away Support Part I Timbers Army by Cody Croghan at World Soccer Reader

Rewind to the late 1970’s. Long before a physical Cascadia Cup existed (debuted in 2004), the Cascadia Derby was thriving. Seattle Sounders, Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps were all members of the North American Soccer League. These three sides were just a car ride apart and could care less about facing Pele or Der Kaiser or Johan Cruyff. Instead, they went after each other and a fierce rivalry was born. As the years passed, the landscape of soccer in the United States changed, but the Cascadia Derby did not. From the NASL to the USL to the USSF D2 Pro League, the rivalry was a constant. [more]

Timbers Army Third Saturday

The Timbers Army Third Saturday for November 2010 takes place in my neck of the woods, at The Florida Room (435 N Killingsworth), on Saturday, November 20.

“If downing pints with your fellow Timbers Army compatriots isn’t enough of a draw, the Florida Room features pool and pinball, comfort food (tater tots!), a covered and heated smoking deck, a jukebox, and a photo booth. That’s right, a photo booth. Instant legends will be born this night.” [more]

MLS Cup Final Viewing

The 2010 MLS Cup Final pits FC Dallas against the Colorado Rapids in Toronto. Normally most Portlanders wouldn’t give a rats ass about this match, but next year the Portland Timbers will be playing in the league, so maybe it’s a good idea for us to take a gander at the competition. [more]

MLS news

Alex Nimo to graduate from Generation Adidas- what it means for RSL and the expansion draft by denz at SBNation

Well last year RSL avoided losing anyone in the expansion draft by working out a deal for Chris Seitz to be traded to the Philadelphia Union, one of the conditions was that the Union would not select any RSL players in the expansion draft.

I didn’t have Alex on my protected list because while he has a good upside the RSL midfield is very deep, there is also the fact that Alex is clearly upset that he hasn’t been brought back into the fold at RSL and spent two years on loan to the Portland Timbers. [more]

Spencer: Reserve League is a great way to develop coaches and players at Prost Amerika Soccer

News that MLS has reintroduced the reserve league has been warmly greeted by all in the Pacific Northwest. But one man has even greater reason than most to allow himself a wry smile and that is the man who coached the last side to win it, new Portland Timbers head coach John Spencer. [more]

The Brad Knighton Interview at Sons of Ben

BK: The Portland Timbers organization is top class. From when I first was loaned out there, I did not know what to expect, but when I met Gavin, and Merit, and the entire organization and coaching staff I felt very welcomed! The fan base there is fantastic. It is going to be such a great addition to the league having them and Vancouver come into the league next year. The Pacific Northwest rivalry will be in full effect. They were a USL team when I was there, and they averaged 14,000 a game. I can’t wait to see their attendance for an MLS game at PGE Park. [more]

MLS Timbers Launch New Portlandtimbers.com at PortlandTimbers.com

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers today launched a new website as part of the team’s Major League Soccer debut in 2011. The Timbers and MLS Digital have constructed an entirely new portlandtimbers.com that will be the leading source for information and content on the Timbers. [more]

Portland Timbers Reach 9,000 Season Tickets Sold at Pitch Black Underground

As you probably already know the Portland Timbers launched their new MLS website yesterday. The new site has received a very positive reception from fans for its polished look. After doing some digging around on the page I found this interesting statement from the ticket sales section. [more]

MLS Welcomes the Timbers

MLS on Timbers: Alan Gordon by Brian Costello at PortlandTimbers.com

Gordon was a standout forward at Oregon State University before signing with the Timbers USL edition in 2004. Nicknamed “Flash” and with fans singing the theme song from the classic film of the same name, Gordon took the league by storm garnering Rookie of the Year honors and tying for the league lead in goals with 17. Eventually signing with the Los Angeles Galaxy and playing alongside David Beckham, Gordon has moved on to be a key part of Chivas USA’s attack. Portland obviously had a big effect on his development and he’s keen to see how Portland and the Timbers Army will make an impact next season in MLS. [more]

MLS on Timbers: Brian Ching by Brian Costello at PortlandTimbers.com

Brian Ching: I thought Portland was a great city. I thought that they had a tremendous amount of fan support especially at the USL level. I remember having some great rivalry games when I was playing with Seattle against Portland. I think that’s going to be one of the best rivalries in the entire MLS. And you throw in Vancouver, I think all three cities really go out and support their teams. And it’s not just that, I think there’s a real dedication and a real loyalty that these teams are going to have. [more]

Offbeat Belly Dance 19-November-2010

November 18, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Offbeat Belly DanceEvery third Friday of the month the Blue Monk (3341 SE Belmont) hosts the Offbeat Belly Dance collective, a club rocking, good timing, genre-defying gang of badass belly dancers.

And this third Friday, November 19 2010 is no exception – the Offbeat Belly Dance collectives invites you to an Awesome! Free show! Yiyiyi!

What time is it? It’s Offbeat time!

Yes, fine citizens, this Friday we return to the ever more gloriously appointed basement jazz club/den of iniquity/belly dance bunker that lies hidden ‘neath The Blue Monk.

Join us this month for returning champions!
…
Vee!

Ziggy!

Jasmine!

And Karissa!

We have a special guest/birthday girl!

That’s right – Jo! Did you catch her scintillating performance at Saqra’s? Yes? Then come see more! No? Omg! Seriously, this is your chance to see her for freeeeeee!

And a fabulous debut performance!

Molicka will join us for her Offbeat debut! We are thrilled to have her with us this month. Join us, and prepare to be amazed!

As always, the show is free.

Join Karissa, the Ringleader of Offbeat Belly Dance (pictured to the right), and the other fabulous dancers at the show Friday night.

Individually, the members of the Offbeat Belly Dance collective perform at shows throughout the Portland area, but on the 3rd Friday of the month they come together at the Blue Monk to perform in a rollicking belly dance revue. One of the things that makes it offbeat, is that the dancers choose whatever kind of music they like. Karissa tells me this has included traditional Middle Eastern music, zydeco, AC/DC, Strauss, The Pogues, hip hop, jazz, blues, Old Crow Medicine Show, the Spice Girls, and just about everything else.

The shows are free, and go from about 7pm until 9pm.

Visit OffbeatBellyDance.com for more information. You can also become a fan on Facebook, and follow the genre-defying, good timing gang of belly dancers in Portland OR, w/Karissa as ringmaster/carnival barker/propagandiston on Twitter at @OffbeatBelly

Video Interlude: The Portland Story

The Portland Story from Saga outerwear on Vimeo.

This video is credited to Saga Outerwear. From the vimeo page description:

This is one of the first short edits I ever produced after purchasing my 7D. I was still highly unfamiliar with video settings and most of the shots taken were tests in different lights and depths with both moving and still subjects. All filming was done hand held and I real like the natural feel that adds to all the shots. Overall it was a good weekend in Portland, OR
