Where to Watch the Grey Cup in Portland (2010)

November 22, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Grey Cup 2010Hang on to your toque and prepare your poutine, the 98th Grey Cup takes place this Sunday, November 28 2010. The Grey Cup is Canada’s Super Bowl – the Canadian Football League’s championship game.

In a rematch of last year’s Cup, defending champions Montreal Alouettes face the Saskatchewan Rough Riders. This year’s Grey Cup game will be played at the Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta. And the half time entertainment is provide by Bachman & Turner!

Canadian Football and American Football share a pedigree, and mostly follow the same rules. Some of the difference:

  • The field in Canadian football is 110 yards long and 65 yards wide, not the 100 yards by 53⅓ yards used in American football.
  • Canadian football plays 3 downs, not 4.
  • In Canadian football all offensive backfield players, except the quarterback, can be in motion when the ball is snapped.

There are other differences too, but these are some of the most obvious to American football fans. As a casual observer (I grew up watching American football but have only watched maybe half a dozen Canadian football games in my entire life) my take is that the Canadian football game is faster paced and higher scoring and there is more passing of the ball and less running. Compared to the NFL, CFL football players are smaller and faster. I don’t care much for gridiron football, but if I had to choose between NFL and CFL I’d go Canadian every time.

Where to watch in Portland

Again this year the Canada America Society of Oregon has organized a viewing at 3:30pm, Sunday November 28th at Macadam’s Bar & Grill (5833 SW Macadam Ave).

Please leave a comment below if you know of other spots the catch the game in Portland!

Video Interlude: Portland to Cannon Beach by Bicycle

Portland To Canon Beach By Bicycle, July 2010 from goddestroyer on Vimeo.

Ahhh, remember July? Shawn Kilmer does. He road his bicycle from Portland to Cannon Beach.

And he made a video of the adventure: Portland To Canon Beach By Bicycle, July 2010 [sic]

At least a year of wanting to make the ride from the Willamette Valley to the Oregon coast by bicycle, finally decided I had the time. The ONLY drawback was not having a saddlebag rack setup and carrying everything on my back. I tried to go as minimal as I could, jersey for sun, thermal for normal weather, sweater for cold, bike shorts, jean shorts (for chillin’), sleeping bag, food, sunglasses. Just that small amount of stuff was still borderline on being too much weight to have on your back for a ride like this.

Visit the Pittock Mansion during the Holidays (2010)

2011 Pittock Mansion holiday plans here!

Pittock Mansion Ready for the HolidaysThe Pittock Mansion has been closed the last few days as volunteers, designers, and local charities prepare it for the holidays. On November 22nd the public is invited in again to share in A Northwest Christmas: The Natural Beauty and Bounty of Oregon. The mansion will have been transformed into a holiday wonderland. Festive decorations, ribbon, garland, poinsettias, and more than 15 Christmas trees will fill the historic house.

Admission is free for members, $9 for adults, $8 for seniors (65+), $6 for youth (ages 6 – 18), and free for children ages 5 and younger.

The holiday display stays up until January 2nd. The mansion is open every day from November 22 until January 2nd 2011, except for Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Hours daily are 11am until 4pm.

Lots of people are enthusiastic about the holidays, so the Mansion can get pretty crazy. To help alleviate the crowding the park offers a free shuttle from December 18 through January 2. Park your car by PSU (or take the train or bus downtown) and head over to PSU Parking Garage #3 (entrance on SW 12th or 13 just south of Market Street). The shuttle bus will pick passengers up every hour from 11am until 3pm, return shuttles departing the mansion hourly from 11:30am until 4:30pm (if it’s snowy or icy, call ahead to make verify shuttle services!).

World Toilet Day 2010 and a Portland Loo Unveiling

November 20, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Mike Vogel and the LooWorld Toilet Day, a day to celebrate the importance of sanitation and raise awareness for the 2.6 billion people who don’t have access to toilets and proper sanitation took place on Friday, November 19 2010.

Events were held around the world, including in Portland, where the public was invited to celebrate World Toilet Day at the First Flush of the Ash Street Portland Loo with Commissioner Randy Leonard.

Alas, this extremely Portland event escaped my attention until it was underway. Fortunately intrepid local filmmaker and blogger Mike Vogel attended. He provided an entertaining live commentary of the event on Twitter, and blogged his special contribution to the ceremony this morning.

When I heard that they would be opening a new Portland Loo on World Toilet Day, I knew that I would have to go, but I also didn’t want to get my hopes up that I would be the first person to officially pee in it. I’m sure construction workers or plumbers installing the Loo used it, and who knows if it was locked before the ceremony. But what if I could be the FIRST person to pee in the new Loo after the ceremonial first flush? A boy can dream.
