Portland’s weekly answer to MST3K, the 7th Planet Picture Show, takes place at 7pm this Thursday, January 13, 2011 at Mount Tabor Theater (4811 SE Hawthorne).
Commies in Space is the theme of this month’s films.
This January we celebrate, (and poke fun at) the beautiful and wild tradition of science fiction movies made in communist nations, specifically Soviet Russia and East Germany. These films are every bit as out there as their capitalist counterparts, but even more colorfully off-the-hook. Prepare yourself for wildly weird imagery, wonk to the top, and some very creative production design.
The film this week is Star Inspector, made in the Soviet Union in 1980.
Replete with almost as much groovy disco music as a blaxploitation flick, this one has awkward gravity wrapped in cheerfully weird visuals to make any fan of camp cinema squeal like a goosed school girl.
Show is free, but there’s an entirely optional suggested donation of $5. There’s a bar too, so you must be 21 and over to attend!
