January 11, 1854: Behemoth Wasco County Created

January 11, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Wasco CountyWhen the Oregon Territorial Legislature created Wasco County on January 11, 1854, it wasn’t just any county. It was one of the largest in the country at 130,000 square miles. I know what you’re thinking: “How is that possible? The whole state of Oregon only encompasses 98,386 square miles!” Well you see the Oregon Territory was huge, extending up into what is now Canada, south to California, and east to the Rocky Mountains. Wasco County, in 1854, made up a big chunk of that, extending from the Washington border to the California border, and stretching east from the Cascades to the Rockies.

Eventually seventeen other eastern Oregon counties and big chunks of several states were carved out of Wasco County, which now covers a mere 2,387 square miles (still bigger than Rhode Island or Delaware). Its northern border is still the Columbia river, but now heading east it ends at the Deschutes. The Warm Springs Indian Reservation makes up the southern border, with Mt. Hood National Forest the western. One thing that hasn’t changed? The Dalles has been the county seat the whole time (though it used to be called Dalles City).

7th Planet Picture Show: Star Inspector (13-January-2010)

Commies in Space - 7th Planet Picture Show January 2011Portland’s weekly answer to MST3K, the 7th Planet Picture Show, takes place at 7pm this Thursday, January 13, 2011 at Mount Tabor Theater (4811 SE Hawthorne).

Commies in Space is the theme of this month’s films.

This January we celebrate, (and poke fun at) the beautiful and wild tradition of science fiction movies made in communist nations, specifically Soviet Russia and East Germany. These films are every bit as out there as their capitalist counterparts, but even more colorfully off-the-hook. Prepare yourself for wildly weird imagery, wonk to the top, and some very creative production design.

The film this week is Star Inspector, made in the Soviet Union in 1980.

Replete with almost as much groovy disco music as a blaxploitation flick, this one has awkward gravity wrapped in cheerfully weird visuals to make any fan of camp cinema squeal like a goosed school girl.

Show is free, but there’s an entirely optional suggested donation of $5. There’s a bar too, so you must be 21 and over to attend!

January 10, 1969: The Old Spaghetti Factory Opens

January 10, 2011 by Heather 1 Comment

The Old Spaghetti FactoryYou may know that Portland is home to such heavy industries as barge building, truck manufacturing and camper making. But did you also know that Portland is the hometown of carb-heavy starch manufacturer The Old Spaghetti Factory? The original location opened on a drizzly January 10 in 1969 in Portland, Oregon.

Following the trend of questionably appetizing industrial pasta concepts, a similar restaurant known as Spaghetti Warehouse opened in Texas three years later.

The Old Spaghetti Factory has expanded impressively since its founding, now boasting over 35 domestic locations, plus a presence in Canada and Japan.

FWIW, the restaurant was never known as “The New Spaghetti Factory,” even in 1969, when that title would have been more accurate.
