Offbeat Belly Dance (21-January-2011)

January 19, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Offbeat Belly DanceEvery third Friday of the month the Blue Monk (3341 SE Belmont) hosts the Offbeat Belly Dance collective, a club rocking, good timing, genre-defying gang of badass belly dancers.

And this third Friday, January 21, 2011 is no exception – the Offbeat Belly Dance collectives invites you to Blue Monk! This Friday! It’s time for Offbeat Belly Dance!

My stars and garters – can it be?

Truly is it time for yet another magical evening deep within the labyrinthine confines of the beautiful Blue Monk, cavorting arm in arm with the mighty mighty Offbeat crew?

Avast, mateys – it is!

Come join us and make a grand start of 2011 as we dazzle and amaze you with:

Vee!

Ziggy!

Jasmine!

Sounds fantastic, right? We’re just getting started!

Also joining us, after far too long of an absence will be:

Cynthia!

And from waaaaaaay back in our Green Dragon days, the triumphant return of:

Natasha!

And finally, and fabulously, please! Please good citizens, do not dare to miss the glorious Offbeat Belly Dance debut of Belly Dance Uncorked’s own:

Jen Samson!

Oh lordy. It’s going to be awesome, folks. Know what we need to complete the awesomeness of the evening?

Join Karissa, the Ringleader of Offbeat Belly Dance (pictured to the right), and the other fabulous dancers at the show Friday night.

Individually, the members of the Offbeat Belly Dance collective perform at shows throughout the Portland area, but on the 3rd Friday of the month they come together at the Blue Monk to perform in a rollicking belly dance revue. One of the things that makes it offbeat, is that the dancers choose whatever kind of music they like. Karissa tells me this has included traditional Middle Eastern music, zydeco, AC/DC, Strauss, The Pogues, hip hop, jazz, blues, Old Crow Medicine Show, the Spice Girls, and just about everything else.

The shows are free, and go from about 7pm until 9pm.

Visit OffbeatBellyDance.com for more information. You can also become a fan on Facebook, and follow the genre-defying, good timing gang of belly dancers in Portland OR, w/Karissa as ringmaster/carnival barker/propagandiston on Twitter at @OffbeatBelly

7th Planet Picture Show: In The Dust of the Stars (20-January-2011)

Commies in Space - 7th Planet Picture Show January 2011Portland’s weekly answer to MST3K, the 7th Planet Picture Show, takes place at 7pm this Thursday, January 20, 2011 at Mount Tabor Theater (4811 SE Hawthorne).

Commies in Space is the theme of this month’s films.

This January we celebrate, (and poke fun at) the beautiful and wild tradition of science fiction movies made in communist nations, specifically Soviet Russia and East Germany. These films are every bit as out there as their capitalist counterparts, but even more colorfully off-the-hook. Prepare yourself for wildly weird imagery, wonk to the top, and some very creative production design.

The film this week is In The Dust of the Stars:

Spaceship Cyrno responds to a distress message sent from the planet TEM 4. But, upon arrival, the inhabitants deny sending any message, or that anything is wrong. Smelling the rampant fishiness, our heroes decide to stay for a while and investigate… [more]

Show is free, but there’s an entirely optional suggested donation of $5. There’s a bar too, so you must be 21 and over to attend!

CellarFest 2 (22-January-2011)

January 19, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Bailey's TaproomCellarFest 2: Return to the Basement takes place Saturday, January 22 at the scene of the original CellarFest, Bailey’s Taproom (213 SW Broadway).

For those who missed last year’s CellarFest, the gist is this: high octane, rare beers from the West Coast’s (and one East Coast’s) best microbreweries. This year’s list is an all-star lineup of some of the very best brews of the last 3-4 years with a little age on them to allow the alcohol burn to mellow a little and the subtle flavors hidden beneath to emerge.

The beer list includes:

  • Alameda ’09 Papa Noels
  • Barley Brown’s ’10 Havoc Imperial Stout
  • Beer Valley ’08 Black Flag
  • Bend ’09 Cherry Baltic Porter
  • Block 15 ’09 Pappy’s Dark
  • Butte Creek ’07 Train Wreck . . .

[See the rest of the beer list on the Bailey’s Taproom blog.]

Entrance fee is $15, which includes a souvenir glass and five taster tokens. Additional tokens set you back $1 a piece, and all samples at this fest cost just one token. Fest runs from 4pm until midnight!

January 19, 1909: Oregon Republicans Elect Democrat to Senate

January 19, 2011 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

George ChamberlainA Republican majority Oregon Legislature actually selected a Democrat for U.S. Senate on January 19, 1909.

This event occurred prior to the 1913 ratification of the Seventeenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which established direct election of Senators by popular vote. In 1909 it was still the state legislatures that selected senators, and the Oregon Republicans were under no legal obligation to send Democrat George Chamberlain, who had received a plurality of the popular vote, to the Senate.

But having finished two stints as Oregon’s Governor, George Chamberlain, had established a reputation for bipartisanship.

He managed to secure the election because voters had elicited promises from legislative candidates that they would elect the senatorial candidate who received the largest popular vote. Chamberlain’s election was a test of legislators’ willingness to follow popular will in senatorial contests and helped establish a national trend that culminated in the ratification of the seventeenth amendment in 1913.
