February 13, 1913: Mimi Runs Aground on Nehalem Spit

February 13, 2011 by Dave Knows 2 Comments

Mimi on Nehalem SpitLost in the fog and mistaking fires on the beach for the lights of a steamer in the mouth of the Columbia, the captain of the German square-rigger Mimi sailed her smack into the Nehalem Spit (about 40 miles south of the Columbia) on the evening of February 13, 1913.

Amazingly, no one was injured, and members of the crew were able to walk ashore in the low tide to meet with the insurance adjuster.

The tragedy occurred when efforts were made to refloat the Mimi on April 6. In heavy seas 18 perished as the barque capsized during the salvage mission.

February 12, 1927: Oregon, My Oregon Adopted State Song

February 12, 2011 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

Oregon My OregonAstorian John Andrew Buchanan and Portlander Henry B. Murtagh wrote the song “Oregon, My Oregon” in 1920. The song was the winner of a statewide contest and on February 12, 1927 it was adopted Oregon’s state song by Senate Joint Resolution No. 2.

Land of the Empire Builders,
Land of the Golden West;
Conquered and held by free men,
Fairest and the best.
Onward and upward ever,
Forward and on, and on;
Hail to thee, Land of Heroes,
My Oregon.

Land of the rose and sunshine
Land of the summer’s breeze;
Laden with health and vigor,
Fresh from the Western seas.
Blest by the blood of martyrs,
Land of the setting sun;
Hail to thee, Land of Promise,
My Oregon.

A-League Chairmen – can you make the A-League great? by Art Sapphire at The Roar

Yes, the football in the A-League has improved over the last six seasons. However, off the pitch and in the stands, the A-League is a becoming a shipwreck, navigated by a blind crew with a broken compass.

I will be using the example of the Portland Timbers as evidence to support my findings. The Portland Timbers are debuting in the MLS this season as the 18th franchise. [more]

Choosing an MLS Team by Chris Ballard at Match Fit USA

So….(looks at notes)…That means I am down to two teams: Seattle and Portland. I hadn’t expected there to be two teams remaining, to be honest. I almost kicked out Seattle at point 2 because I didn’t think Qwest Field was a ‘soccer’ stadium but upon closer examination it had been designed with soccer as well as football in mind, so I guess that is close enough [more]

The Gaffer: What Kind of Coach is John Spencer? by Ryan Gates at Stumptown Footy

I was looking at our roster and was wondering who would be the most influential in terms of the teams’ style of play. The only name that really jumped out at me was Kenny Cooper. Then it hit me: at first the most influential person would be the coach. I admit this should have been obvious but like most fans I was really focused on our players. [more]

February 11, 1990: Arlington Club Admits Women

February 11, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Arlington ClubThe Arlington Club was established in 1867 by thirty-five Portland business men as a place to “fraternize for mutual enjoyment and relaxation, and to provide a meeting place for discussing their own and Portland’s destiny.”

Translation: No girls (or Jews or ethnic minorities) allowed!

That is, until the 1960s when Jewish-American federal judge Gus J. Solomon (yes, that Gus J. Solomon), amongst other, pointed out the discriminatory practices. Slowly things began to change as non-whites were accepted for membership.

But it wasn’t until February 11, 1990 that women were permitted to join the club (and presumably join discussions of Portland’s destiny).
