Entertainment for People (23-February-2011)

February 14, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Entertainment For People 2011Entertainment for People is back in 2011!

Brought to you by the people behind Back Fence PDX, this year’s event takes place on Wednesday, February 23rd at The Woods (6637 SE Milwaukie) – Formerly Whilhelm Funeral Home and Crematory!

Entertainment for People is a variety show featuring cartoons, sketch comedy, poetry, film, and more. The line up looks intriguing:

Matt Bors

Matt will be showing his political cartoons on Tea-Baggers, our awesome wars, the lovely economy and some very special fan mail he receives. . .

Matt Bors is an editorial cartoonist and comic journalist who has cartooned from Afghanistan and released the graphic novel War Is Boring with journalist David Axe.

Matthew Dickman

Matthew might read a poem about the death of goldfish, a poem about your ankles, a poem that has Kung Fu dvd’s in it, and maybe a poem where his father becomes a Russian Mail-Order Bride.

Matthew is the author of All-American Poem (APR/Copper Canyon Press 2008). He lives and works in Portland, Oregon where he was born 100 years ago in 1975. He has had poems published in McSweeny’s, The Believer, The New Yorker, and other disreputable places.

Riley Michael Parker

PREMIERING A BRAND NEW SHORT FILM…a dramatization of the stark realities of high school wrestling, frisky teenagers, and what it takes to stay under weight.

This is one man’s true story. Parker has a thing for werewolves. Well, not like a thing – there’s no lust involved or anything, but it’s like a thing. I mean the girl from THE HOWLING II is really foxy, but that’s not his fault, is it? Also he’s a fiction writer, a filmmaker, and a mediocre lover. Also he drinks too much coffee. Also his license is expired.

Ritah Parrish and Sarah Grace McCandless

“Are you there, God? It’s us, Ritah and Sarah Grace.” These two fine lookin’ ladies will be performing a new piece that demonstrates how to live adult life by the Judy Blume adolescent code. Sarah Grace killed in front of throngs of blood-thirsty teen angst lovers at Mortified, and has two much-acclaimed novels from Simon & Schuster, The Girl I Wanted to Be, and Grosse Pointe Girl. Ritah is a Portland stage veteran, performing in loads of different comedy and theater venues. Look for her in the upcoming awesome short film, Stella’s Flight.

B. Frayn Masters

Masters’ll be performing some kind of new and ridiculous thing. You may recognize the name as she is one of the co-hosts and founders of Back Fence PDX. Recently, B. Frayn has graced stages with readings from her work in McSweeney’s, Hobart, and as Cherry Daniels in GGW magazine. She will be premiering her brand new webisodic series, Desiree’s Days, soon.

Tickets are $15 at the door – Visit BackFencePDX.com for more information.

February 14, 1896: Portland’s Union Station Opens its Doors

February 14, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Union StationThe doors of Portland’s new grand central railroad station, known today as Union Station, were thrown open promptly at 1pm on February 14, 1896.

Workmen transferring contents from the nearby old terminal, which was being dismantled, were impeded in their work by crowds of gawkers excited to explore the new station.

This caused the management to wish it had kept the doors locked one day longer. However, all kept their tempers and gave way to the visitors, being recompensed or reconciled, perhaps, by the many flattering compliments which were liberally bestowed upon the commodious and handsome structure.*

Nevertheless the afternoon Salem train left on time at 4pm.

Railroad man Henry Villard had spearheaded efforts to create a grandiose train depot in Portland – the original plans would have made it the largest depot in the world (which would have just been silly, but well in line with the hubris of some of the Portlanders of the era).

Due to financial issues we ended up with the much more modest, but grand nonetheless, Union Station we see today.

Kona Brewing Unveils New Seasonal: Koko Brown

February 14, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Koko BrownWord has gotten out, somehow, that I like beer.

I also like Hawaii. So last Thursday, Heather and I were happy to accept an invitation to a secret pau hana tapping of Kona Brewing Company‘s latest seasonal Koko Brown.

Appropriately, it was at the tiki bar Thatch (2733 NE Broadway).

Koko Brown is made with toasted coconut, which was smooth and roasty. A little sweet, it finishes relatively dry, and the toasted coconut is pleasant, not overbearing. It goes down easy – Heather even liked it!

Koko Brown should be in stores soon.
