7th Planet Picture Show: America 3000 (17-February-2011)

February 16, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

America 3000Portland’s weekly answer to MST3K, the 7th Planet Picture Show, takes place at 7pm this Thursday, February 17, 2011 at Mount Tabor Theater (4811 SE Hawthorne).

This week’s film is America 3000:

This future dystopia tale is set in what remains of the U.S.A. 900 years after a nuclear war. People have banded into clans, where women fight and win control over a region while men are held as slaves and divided into functional groups, such as laborers, servants, or those who father children. When the leader of the dominant female clan dies, there is a dispute over her vacated position; two sisters vie for the honor and are challenged by the leader of a another clan. Meanwhile, one of the men has found an old presidential bunker and a stash of weapons. His plan is to use his discovery to free the men at last.

Show is free, but there’s an entirely optional suggested donation of $5. There’s a bar too, so you must be 21 and over to attend!

Timbers Army 3rd Saturday (19-February-2011)

February 16, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Timbers ArmyThe last Timbers Army 3rd Saturday of the offseason takes place this Saturday, February 19, 2011 at the Leisure Public House (8002 N Lombard).

The Leisure Public House is one of our favorite super secret TA bars that for years has screened on-line Timbers matches for just one or two people, because that’s the right thing to do. Travis, a devout Timbers/Everton supporter, has created a unique Pub in cozy St. Johns featuring amazing beers, wonderful fresh squeezed cocktails (when was the last time you had a Hot Toddy with ginger grated right in front of you?) and an amazing 100% house made menu (build your own bruschetta!).

There is an amazing jukebox, load of games, a large heated patio with ping-pong and Bocce ball, and the possibility of a movie screening. Maybe. Hell this place is so cozy there is even a box of blankets to curl up on the couch with!

The perfect place to try and relax before 28 nail biting days of anticipation!

Visit the Facebook event page or TimbersArmy.org for details, but the important one is the start time: 7:01pm.

February 16, 1893: First Electric Interurban Connects Portland and Oregon City

OC Electric Railway Opens (from Feb. 17, 1893 Oregonian)One of the first interurban electric railways in the country connected Portland and Oregon City. Called the East Side Railway, the first official ride took place on February 16, 1893. The Oregonian reported the next day:

The formal opening of the East Side Railway Company’s electric line between Portland and Oregon City took place yesterday afternoon, and was made the occasion of quite a demonstration at the Falls City. At 2:10pm the company’s car “Helen” left the corner of Madison and Second . . .

The 16 mile long line ran until 1958. Now an effort is underway to create The Trolley Trail, a regional multi-use trail, utilizing the old streetcar line right-of-way between the Milwaukie and Gladstone.

Join Karissa, the Ringleader of Offbeat Belly Dance (pictured to the right), and the other fabulous dancers at the show Friday night.

Individually, the members of the Offbeat Belly Dance collective perform at shows throughout the Portland area, but on the 3rd Friday of the month they come together at the Blue Monk to perform in a rollicking belly dance revue. One of the things that makes it offbeat, is that the dancers choose whatever kind of music they like. Karissa tells me this has included traditional Middle Eastern music, zydeco, AC/DC, Strauss, The Pogues, hip hop, jazz, blues, Old Crow Medicine Show, the Spice Girls, and just about everything else.

The shows are free, and go from about 7pm until 10pm.

Visit OffbeatBellyDance.com for more information. You can also become a fan on Facebook, and follow the genre-defying, good timing gang of belly dancers in Portland OR, w/Karissa as ringmaster/carnival barker/propagandiston on Twitter at @OffbeatBelly
