Kick Ass Oregon History: Chinatown Special Edition Part 1

June 30, 2011 by Dave Leave a Comment

Kick Ass Oregon History: Chinatown Special Edition Part 1Kick Ass Oregon History is the latest series of podcasts from the enthusiastic historians behind ORHistory.com.

The newest episode has dropped:

Chinatown Special Edition Part 1, In which we learn that Portland’s Historic Chinatown was once a hive of scum and villainy.

The previous episodes:

  • Kick Ass Oregon History Vol 1 #1: The Roseburg Blast – The city of Roseburg goes up in smoke
  • Kick Ass Oregon History Vol 1 #2: The Eggs! – 1942 poisoning at the Oregon State Hospital for the Insane
  • Kick Ass Oregon History Vol 1 #3: Balloon Bombs!
  • Kick Ass Oregon History Vol 2 #1: Bobbie The Wonder Dog
  • Kick Ass Oregon History Vol 2 #2: Treasures of Oregon – Portland Edition

The brains behind this project are the crack hustlers of Oregon History Doug Kenck-Crispin and Andy Lindberg. Doug is a graduate student studying Public History and Pacific Northwest History at PSU, and Andy, though a Portland native, is currently working as an actor in New York City. Doug does most of the research and writing for the podcasts with input from Andy, who voices the broadcasts with a thespian’s flair.

With the Kick Ass Oregon History podcast they plan to cover just the good stuff: Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll and Earth Shattering, Devastating Destruction.

Ultimately, our goal is to take Oregon History out of the hallowed halls of the academy, get folks excited and enthused about this shared history, and get them out into the state, digging it and experiencing it. Get them to embrace it, and get their boots muddy in the process. It’s all OUR History; nobody owns it.

Thrill to the best blues in the world while relaxing on the banks of the beautiful Willamette River – all the while smiling at the thought that you are helping Oregon Food Bank fight hunger. That’s the magic of the 2011 Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival, July 1 to 4, in Portland, Ore. [more]

The RockThe Cort and Fatboy Midnight Movie: The Rock

Truly, the Birth of Bayhem as we know it, screened in 35mm, unapologetically, and without remorse. Yeah, this isn’t like us. We know. But sometimes, you just gotta say “Oh, why not!” and drive a bright yellow ferrari through a plate glass window while screaming profanities and firing guns out the window. You only get to be the Rocket Man once. [more]

Saturday

Portland TimbersPortland Timbers vs Sporting Kansas City

The Portland Timbers (5-7-3) meet Sporting Kansas City (4-6-5) for the first time ever on Saturday at Jeld-Wen Field. Kickoff is at 8pm.

The Timbers, struggling to play consistently are coming off their worst loss of the season last week in Dallas. Kansas City, though near the bottom of the Eastern Conference standing, are in fine form lately, undefeated in their last 7 regular season matches (and last 9 including U.S. Open Cup matches).

June 30, 1994: Tonya Harding Stripped of Her U.S. Title, Banned For Life

June 30, 2011 by Dave Leave a Comment

On June 30, 1994 the U.S. Figure Skating Association stripped Tonya Harding of her 1994 national figure skating title and banned her for life from the association (The Oregonian, 1-July-1994). Almost six months after Tonya’s gang of bumbling criminals attacked, the association’s disciplinary panel completed their investigation:

“By a preponderance of the evidence, the panel did conclude she had prior knowledge of the attack,” said William Hybl, the panel’s chairman. “Tonya knew about and helped plan the assault on Nancy Kerrigan.”

Harding denied that she had prior knowledge of the attack, but the panel did not believe her and determined that Harding’s actions surrounding the Jan. 6 attack on her rival, Nancy Kerrigan, “evidence a clear disregard for fairness, good sportsmanship and ethical behavior” (New York Times, 1-July-1994).

June 29, 1812: Robert Stuart Leaves Astoria

June 29, 2011 by Dave Leave a Comment

Robert StuartAn expedition commanded by Robert Stuart left Astoria on June 29, 1812 with dispatches for John Jacob Astor. The Pacific Fur Company Minute Book records:

Resolved that it being necessary to send an express to New York and all the papers and other things being prepared, Mr. Robert Stuart is hereby instructed to have and to take charge of them, with which he is to go as directly to N. Y. as circumstances will admin, and there to be governed by the directions of Mr. Astor as to the time of his returning to the Northwest Coast.

The men, in the first organized eastbound transcontinental crossing after Lewis and Clark’s, reached St. Louis on April 30, 1813 with their “express” missive. They also blazed a new trail, discovering South Pass and the great Platte on Central route which was destined to become the main highway of the covered-wagon migrations of the Oregon Trail.
