portlandtimbers_originalnasllogo1On August 5, 1973, two years before he became the first player signed by the North American Soccer League expansion Portland Timbers, English-U.S. midfielder Mick Hoban earned one cap for the U.S. national team (The Oregonian, 26-March-1975). The U.S. beat Canada 2-0 (The Oregonian, 6-August-1973).

Hoban made 65 appearances for the Timbers before resigning in 1978 to work for Blue Ribbon Sports (which eventually came to be known as Nike).

Mick Hoban serves now as an alumni ambassador for the Major League Soccer incarnation of the Portland Timbers.
