The Portland Timbers start the 2012 season at home, hosting the Philadelphia Union in the season debut for both teams tonight at Jeld-Wen Field.
The match will be broadcast live at 6:30 p.m. (kickoff is actually at 6:55 p.m.) on ESPN2, ESPN Deportes, 750 AM The Game, and La Pantera 940 AM.
The Union made the playoffs in 2011, finishing third in the Eastern Conference, and ultimately bowing out to the Houston Dynamo in the semifinals. Portland, as you no doubt remember, came up just short of making the playoffs, but had a good showing at home through much of the season. Last May the Timbers defeated the Union 1-0 in Portland, drawing at Philadelphia 0-0. Tonight’s match will be only regular season meeting of these two teams this season.
I’ll be at the game, dressed very warmly and water resistant. It just wouldn’t be a Portland Timbers home opener without cold pouring rain!
