Timbers Army First Thursday (6-January-2011)

January 6, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Timbers ArmyToast the New Year with the Timbers Army at the first Timbers Army First Thursday of 2011. It’s going down tonight, January 6, 2011, at the Bitter End Pub (1981 W Burnside).

When the announcement that the Timbers are joining MLS came in March 2009, 2011 seemed so far away. And yet, it’s just a couple of days away, as is the first First Thursday of 2011!

Come one and all to your home away from home, the Bitter End, on Thursday January 6th for drinks, TA and crystal ball gazing as we head towards our first MLS season. Start time is 7:01 PM. As usual, there will be multiple beer specials and an $1 Irish whiskey discount for 107ist members (with card), and happy hour food ’til 10PM.

RSVP at the Facebook page, or better yet just show up at 7:01pm!

TimbersThe first official news out of the gate in 2011 is the healthy season tickets sales. The Timbers have sold 10000 season tickets with plans to cap the total at 12000. This will leave around 8000 tickets each game available for walk ups and promotions.

For a recap of the ups and downs of 2010 for the Portland Timbers, check out Dropping Timber‘s two part Timber Bits – 2010 Review (part 1, part 2). Over at OregonLive Kip has accomplished a similar task with his Timbers Rewind for 2010 (part 1, part 2).

A view from the stands of the Timbers by Stanley Holmes at Sportspress Northwest

Garrett Dittfurth, a board member for the 107ist of the Timbers Army, was not present during those heady NASL days. But he knows they were a good team — they produced three playoff seasons (1975, 1978 and 1981) and found themselves in the 1975 Soccer Bowl. Crowds reaching 20,000 per game were the norm, back in the day. [more]
