Pittock Mansion Holiday Season 2011

November 19, 2011 by Dave Leave a Comment

Pittock Mansion Ready for the HolidaysOnce again Portland’s historic Pittock Mansion is going all out for the holiday season. This year, from November 21 through January 2, the theme is Christmas Around The World.

Every year, starting more than 40 years ago, dozens of volunteer decorators, designers, and local organizations donate their time and talents to transform Pittock Mansion into a Christmas wonderland for approximately 17,000 delighted visitors during the holiday season. This year’s bedecking of the Mansion’s hallways, grand marble staircase, and 23 treasure-filled rooms will feature multi-cultural Christmas customs and traditions as we celebrate Christmas Around the World.

Visitors are invited to enjoy the special exhibit and decorations, including over two dozen Christmas trees. Musicians will be performing regularly in the Music Room, and of course there are plenty of shopping options in the Museum Store.

Admission is free for members, $9 for adults, $8 for seniors (65+), $6 for youth (ages 6 – 18), and free for children ages 5 and younger.

The holiday display stays up until January 2nd. The mansion is open every day from November 22 until January 2nd 2011, except for Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Hours daily are 11am until 4pm.

Lots of people are enthusiastic about the holidays, so the Mansion can get pretty crazy. To help alleviate the crowding the park offers a free shuttle from December 17 through January 1. Park your car by PSU (or take the train or bus downtown) and head over to PSU Parking Garage #3 (entrance on SW 12th or 13 just south of Market Street).

Sunday Lecture: Matt Love on the Yaquina Bay Bridge (20-November-2011)

November 17, 2011 by Dave Leave a Comment

The Oregon Historical Society (1200 SW Park Avenue) presents a Sunday Lecture by Matt Love on November 20, 2011 at 2pm. He will be discussing his new book, Love and the Green Lady: Meditations on the Yaquina Bay Bridge: Oregon’s Crown Jewel of Socialism:

Oregon opened the Yaquina Bay Bridge in Newport on Labor Day 1936. Built during the New Deal, the Yaquina Bay Bridge was the aesthetic and engineering brainchild of Conde McCullough, Oregon’s State Bridge Engineer from 1919 to 1937. For 75 years the Yaquina Bay Bridge has stood magnificently as a monument to excellence in architecture and how a partnership between state and federal government in the throes of an economic calamity can produce something practical, beautiful, and lasting. It is nothing less than an Oregon landmark and a powerful reminder how to build a great bridge.

Author, editor, teacher, and historian Matt Love has written prolifically about Oregon, and in 2009, he won the Oregon Literary Arts’ Stewart H. Holbrook Literary Legacy Award for his contributions to Oregon history and literature. He also runs Nestucca Spit Press.

OHS members and Multnomah County residents are admitted to the lecture free, and entrance to the event is included with regular admission. Call 503-306-5214 or RSVP online.

Matt Love will also be appearing Sunday at the Kick Ass Oregon History DB Cooper Night event, co-sponsored by Dave Knows Portland, at 7:30pm at Mississippi Studios

November 11, 1973: “Peoples Day” on the Fremont Bridge

November 11, 2011 by Dave Leave a Comment

In anticipation of its imminent grand opening, to traffic, November 11, 1973 was declared Peoples Day on the Fremont Bridge (The Oregonian, 12 November 1972).

Picture Page in The Oregonian, 12 November 1973Braving a rainy, gusty day, Portlander walked, jogged or bicycled over the Fremont Bridge Sunday, celebrating its grand opening and its first and last day as a “people place.”

Moving out of a wind-whipped shuttle stop at the bridge’s east end, a place of instant craft shops and hot dog stands, pedestrians explored the $82 million span which will open to traffic Nov. 15.

It was easy to ignore the weather, however, in activities of this “Peoples Day.” From morning until evening, taxpayers enjoyed such diversities as crew racing, square dancing, and Finnish-American singing.

Others had more personal business. Old people seemed interested in examining the bolts, new cement and the paint job; stopping to look at new city views.

Youngsters seemed intent on going back and forth. Bill Fuller Jr., 5, and his brother Mark, 2, were perhaps the first tricyclists over the bridge. “They can brag about it someday,” said their father.

Steve Wood, 12, Milwaukie, and Randy Peterson, 13, Portland, defied winds to traverse the span several times on unicycles. “You do it very carefully,” said Steve.

And of course there were Tri-Met buses, balloons, a couple of dog fights and, under foot, the brand new bridge everyone came to see.

The bridge opened to automobile traffic on November 15, 1973.

Portland Metro RV Show (November 10-13, 2011)

November 9, 2011 by Dave Leave a Comment

Airstream BambiThis isn’t the sort of thing I usually blog about at Dave Knows, but last year Heather and I attended because we were seriously considering purchasing an RV. Ultimately we decided against it . . . for the time being. But we enjoyed last year’s show, and fell in love with the Airstreams.

The 53rd Portland Metro RV Show takes place this weekend, November 10 through 13, 2011 at the Expo Center (2060 N Marine Drive).

Dozens of Portland RV dealers and dozens of exhibitors will be on hand showing off their recreational vehicle wares. We recommend you make a bee line to the Airstreams!

The show hours are 11am until 8pm Thursday through Saturday, and 11am to 6pm Sunday. Admission $9 for adults, $7 for seniors 50 and over, and free for kids under 16 (with adult). Go to PortlandMetroRV.com to print up 2 for 1 admission coupons. Save yourself from the hassle of parking – take the Yellow Line MAX!
