Happy St. Unicorn’s Day!

March 17, 2010 by Dave Knows 3 Comments

Unicorned Beef

On St Unicorn’s Day, we drink to remember, instead of our usual reason, drinking to forget.

With these inspirational words from esteemed film director Mike Vogel, I wish you a fantastic St. Unicorn’s Day.

Naturally Portland is a hot bed of unicornaphilia. Evidence suggests that it is not merely legend that this great city was built upon an ancient unicorn burial ground. In Mike Vogel’s treatise on St. Unicorn’s Day, he has confirmed there are archeological bones and horns in dirt type of evidence.

Besides drinking to remember, it is traditional also to feast on [uni]corned beef and boiled cabbage and root vegetables on this day (if some of this sounds familiar, it is because, like so many religious holidays, St. Patrick’s Day is actually based on an old pagan celebration: St. Unicorn’s Day). Once again this year, Heather and I have made our own [uni]corned beef, but you’re in luck too if you stop by plenty of other places around town.

I invite you to share your St. Unicorn’s Day traditions, musings and reflections below!

And once again, to all Portlanders everywhere, I wish you a fantastic St. Unicorn’s Day.

Watch The Waiting List on DVD

The Waiting ListThe Waiting List, local filmmaker Mike Vogel‘s first feature film, is now available on DVD.

Mike goes for the hard sell:

For those of you either hit hard by the craptastic economy or who are hesitant to drop $10 on a movie you’ve never seen by a director you’ve never heard of, I do have a plan to livestream the entire movie in March for free on Ustream or some site like that. And eventually I hope to have it available in other ways besides fragile physical discs that are dying off as a medium.

But until then, please go buy a copy of The Waiting List for yourself. Or buy one as a baby shower gift for that first time parent. Or that stay-at-home dad. That working mom. That couple trying to get their kid into preschool. This movie was made for parents and now I hope it will be seen by parents.

Mike made the film for less than $1500 over three weekends at an elementary school where his brother teaches first grade. The story is based on an actual experience he had waiting overnight to get his daughter into a preschool, and it stars local actors Jayme S. Hall, Audrey Walker, Bryce Flint-Somerville, Amanda Englund, Teresa Decher, and Mercedes Rose.

The Portland premiere of The Waiting List took place last Thursday night at the Hollywood Theatre. Heather and I enjoyed the film immensely (and not just because she won a copy of said DVD during a post-screening raffle!). The film is a funny, sarcastic, profanity-laced, vodka-fueled tea party.

Order your own copy here!.

February 18: Portland Premiere of The Waiting List

The Waiting ListThe Portland Premiere of The Waiting List, a foul-mouthed, sex-obsessed, back-stabbing comedy about preschool enrollment takes place Thursday, February 18th at the Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd).

This is the first feature film from Portlander (and friend of the blog) Mike Vogel. He made the film for less than $1500 over three weekends at an elementary school where his brother teaches first grade. The story is based on an actual experience he had waiting overnight to get his daughter into a preschool, and it stars local actors Jayme S. Hall, Audrey Walker, Bryce Flint-Somerville, Amanda Englund, Teresa Decher, and Mercedes Rose.

Heather and I have had the privilege of seeing it already, and we can attest, it’s a friggin funny movie. You’ll never think of Disney princesses the same, also it will make you not want to have children.

And Mike promises the Portland premiere of The Waiting List will be a freaking event, Portland style:

We’ll be promoting other Portland movies, web series, blogs, artists, podcasts–basically anyone doing their own thing–prior to the screening (more on that in a few days). After the movie, there will be a Q&A with some of the actors. Your admission ticket will also enter you in our speed raffle to win stuff, like being one of the first people to own the DVD. This is not just a screening of some local indie movie you’ve never heard of… this is going to be a freaking event!

Admission is only $5, and show time is 7pm on Thursday, February 18 at the Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd).

More Portland-style Movie Making with Mike Vogel

Heather and I had a blast last month as tourists on the set of Mike Vogel‘s latest feature, Did You Kiss Anyone? a romantic comedy about marriage, sex, and shi**ing with the door open. So when Mike twittered recently that he needed extras for a couple bar scenes this weekend, we jumped at the opportunity to “work” with him again.

Sunday afternoon found us at the Sellwood Public House (8132 SE 13th), pretending to be customers while a hilarious scene unfolded behind us at the bar, starring local actors Mercedes Rose, and Bryce Flint-Somerville. Jason Singh and Holly [sorry, didn’t catch her full name!] had small parts too.

Portland-style Moviemaking with Mike Vogel

A couple weekends ago Heather and I had the pleasure of sitting in on a half day of shooting of Mike Vogel‘s latest feature, Did You Kiss Anyone? a romantic comedy about marriage, sex, and shi**ing with the door open.

Heather explains:

Up until that day, we had never met Mike. We had enjoyed his fucking brilliant Snowpocalypse video from the storms last year. And the charming episodes of Did You Cast Anyone? And as usual, we exchanged tweets about what we ate for lunch. Because that’s all anyone does on the Twitter.
