The City Club of Portland presents Citizens Read: Portland’s Goose Hollow, this Monday, September 19, 2011 at the Mission Theater (1624 NW Glisan).

Portland’s Goose Hollow explores the intersection of the natural and urban world, when Northwest Portland was creek and lake, and Old Town was largely a bog. The plentiful photos bring the past to life in this truly local read.

The author of Portland’s Goose Hollow, Tracy J Prince, PhD, will be joined by former Portland Mayor Bud Clark to lead an interactive discussion and present a slide show.

Doors open at 5pm, program begins at 6:30pm. Entrance is free, and minors are permitted with parent or guardian.

Art SparkJoin Portland Taiko and Wordstock this Thursday, September 15, 2011 from 5pm to 7pm for Art Spark at the Green Dragon Bistro and Pub (928 SE 9th).

Join us in the beer garden, pick up your Wordstock 2011 festival guide and experience a sampling of Portland Taiko’s upcoming performance. Maybe while you’re with us, you’ll fold a paper crane for tsunami survivors, get your photo taken in Wordstock’s iconic red chair, or write your own life story, in seven syllables or less.

The Art Spark mission: A Bi-monthly Mingling of Artists of all sorts to meet, discuss, blather, applaud & plot the growth of the Arts in Portland. Events are held bi-monthly on 3rd Thursdays.

KBOO Book and Record Sale (10-September-2011)

KBOOThe annual KBOO Book and Record Sale takes place Saturday, September 10, 2011 at the Eagle’s Lode (SE 50th & Hawthorne) from 2pm to 9pm.

Some of KBOO’s finest DJs will be on hand spinning some of the great records we have available.

This is a benefit for KBOO and all proceeds will go to supporting the great local programming you love to hear.

The sale is members only from 2-3pm, but the public is invited the rest of the afternoon and evening.

Night of the Bluebird: Bukowski’s Birthday and Barfly (15-August-2011)

Night of the BluebirdCelebrate the late Charles Bukowski‘s 91st birthday with a night of readings and writings by local luminaries, rare Bukowski footage, and a one night only screening of Barfly at the Mission Theater (1624 NW Glisan) on Monday, August 15, 2011 (actually the day before Buk’s birthday). Night of the Bluebird: Celebrating Charles Bukowski – readings, writings, ravings is presented by The First Rule of Book Club.

Hard Living, Big Talking, Womanizing, Alcoholic…The Legend of Bukowski/Chinanski often out shined the reason he became famous in the first place.

His Writing.

Known as “The Laureate of the American Lowlife” Bukowski drew from his personal experience. His thousands of poems and hundreds of stories call on a unique lexicon of lower class life to capture stories of love, life and dead end jobs – all punctuated with broken bottles and broken hearts.

Must be 21 and over to enter, admission is a mere $5. Doors open at 8:30pm, readings begin at 9pm, and Barfly screens at 9:30pm.

Portland's Black Panthers Comic Release and PresentationJoin The Dill Pickle Club, Portland’s creative cultural club, on Saturday, August 13, 2011 for Portland’s Black Panthers: Comic Release and Presentation.

The Black Panthers have a rich and important history in Portland—this new comic from the Dill Pickle Club tells their story.

Artist Khris Soden and writer Sarah Mirk are proud to debut the fourth installment in the Oregon History Comics series work after spending months researching, writing and drawing the 40-page work.

At the launch, local Black Panther Party founder Kent Ford will give a short talk about his experiences within the party and historian Jules Boykoff will discuss the relationship between media and the Panthers in Portland.

The presentation takes place at Reflections/Talking Drum (446 NE Killingsworth) from 4pm to 6pm.
