Portland Poutine’s first review: The Original

October 26, 2009 by Dave Knows 5 Comments

The Original's poutine (with scotch egg)

I am proud to announce that Portland Poutine has published it’s first poutine review (by yours truly!). Heather and I made a special trip to The Original: A Dinerant two weekends ago to try the poutine, and we were not disappointed. Here’s an excerpt from the review:

We arrived on a lazy Sunday afternoon to take advantage of the Original’s every day happy hour (3pm-6pm, until 8pm at the bar). Four bucks for a platter of poutine is a great deal! It was such a great deal we also ordered the scotch egg with mustard, and the pigs in a blanket made with a kobe beef frank and served with cheddar fondue(!).

And below, enjoy a bonus photo of that kobe beef pig in a blanket with cheddar fondue mentioned above.

The Calgary Herald visits Portland

November 23, 2008 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

It’s become a personal joke that every travel article written about Portland contains at least one factual error and the odds are even that the phrase “at the confluence of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers” will rear its head.

Joseph Blake’s Portland travel article for the Calgary Herald, West coast cool, does not submit to the latter, but falls right in line on the former.

During a recent, long weekend my wife and I spent hours at Portland’s sprawling Art Museum, an afternoon enjoying views of Mt. Ranier, Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens while walking the trails of Washington Park, and an evening at the Center Stage production of Guys and Dolls, but mostly we ate, and ate, and ate.

Actually this one’s a twofer; Mt. Rainier is misspelled and, though Wikipedia says “on days of exceptional clarity, it can also be seen from as far away as Portland, Oregon”, it is the mountain vista one associates with Seattle. In all probability Mt. Adams was the third mountain in Mr. Blake’s purview.

But that’s nitpicking. As travel articles go, it’s fine. Standards such as Powells Books, the Pearl District, NW 23rd, Saturday Market, and *sigh*, Paley’s Place make appearances, and there are some good lines:

If you love cities, you’ll love Portland. Oregon’s largest city is both a nostalgic reflection of North America’s early 20th-century urban boom and an in-the-moment vision of a dynamic, environmentally sensitive modern city that works.

Poutine in Portland II

Update: If you’re looking for Poutine in Portland, check out our new site: Portland Poutine!

With the Coupe Grey in Montreal fast approaching, this seems an opportune time to revisit my favorite French-Canadian invention: poutine!

Over a year ago I beseeched the blog readers of Portland to reveal to me the location of poutine in Portland.
And the bloggers of Portland heard my call! (Well, at least altportland‘s VJ and Cuisine Bonne Femme from PortlandFoodAndDrink.com, and now blogging at Food Carts Portland did.)

Since that time the Florida Room has ceased to offer poutine, but Potato Champion has taken up the call to champion poutine to the people of Portland.

And of course, you have the option of making your own poutine. I buy fresh cheese curds whenever I can find them (Rogue Creamery‘s are available occasionally at the farmers markets), and I have a Québécoise friend who, whenever she makes a trip to her homeland, brings me back cans and packets of poutine gravy. And of course, french fries are easy! Other Portlanders have tried their hand at making poutine too – check out this delicious account, with photos, at Gild the (Voodoo)lily,: homemade sweet potato poutine.

Dave Knows Canada

Update: Alas, other geniuses have already invented my invention

Potato chips are the topic of a recent post on my favorite Canadian blog, XUP. Here’s a sample:

They’re Lay’s Classic. Shiny yellow, red and white bag. The King of Chips. Every one perfection. No brown rims of leftover peel. No green aliens. No overcooked freaks. Just the right amount of bubbly ones to make them special — a treat. No weird flavours or ripples. No pretense to healthiness.*

She should be writing copy for Frito Lay!

In any case, this post inspired me. I have come up with a million-dollar (Canadian) invention:

That’s right, Poutine**-flavoured potato chips!!!!

* You can tell XUP is Canadian because she uses the British/Canadian spelling of “flavor”, but also calls the fried potato snack “chips”, not “crisps” like a Brit would do.

** Portlanders can find authentic poutine at Potato Champion (SE 12th and Hawthorne).
