Update: For 2011 information go here: El Grito y Fiestas Patrias 2011

El GritoEl Hispanic News is sponsoring the 4th Annual El Grito y Fiestas Patrias celebration Tuesday, September 15th at Pioneer Courthouse Square.

Entry is free and the party begins at 12 p.m. and continues until 10 p.m. In addition to folkloric and Aztec dancers and live mariachi, salsa, cumbia, and pop music, the event will include food and beverages for sale, community booths, vendors, and the Mexican tradition known as El Grito de Independencia.

El Grito y Fiestas Patrias celebrates the independence of Mexico and other Latin American countries from Spain. As Mexican President Felipe Calderón presents the nation’s traditional El Grito in Mexico City, so too will Portland commemorate Mexican independence in the same manner in Pioneer Courthouse Square, with a presentation of the revolutionary cry for independence, El Grito de Independencia, by Consul General Enrique A. Romero Cuevas at 9 p.m. Portland Mayor Sam Adams will also be on hand to proclaim September 15 as the “Day of El Grito y Fiestas Patrias Celebration” in the City of Portland.

May 30-31: A beautiful weekend for Timbers soccer (x2)

May 28, 2009 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

TimbersSaturday May 30th will be a lovely day for a tailgate. And then at 7pm the Vancouver Whitecaps visit PGE Park to face the Timbers in the teams’ second match up of the year. Vancouver, perennially a good team, is one point behind Portland in the standings. This will be a great match.

The Timbers return to the field Sunday, May 31st at 5pm to take on the Club America Reserves in a friendly exhibition match. Expect, and enjoy, a large, raucous crowd – these exhibition matches against Mexican teams always deliver in that department. We’ll probably get to see all the way to the end of the Timbers’ bench for this one, due to the rather important match against Vancouver less than 24 hours earlier, so study up!

The Timbers are coming off a fantastic weekend in Puerto Rico. La Tropa Naranja was sin suerte ante Portland – the teams drew in the first match 1-1, but the Timbers snatched 3 points in the second in Bayamón 2-1 – our first win in Puerto Rico since the Naranjas entered the league.

The other big Timbers news this week was the official announcement of a July 25th friendly against the recently promoted Burnley Football Club of England’s Championship League – next year they’ll be playing against the big boys in the Premiership. This summer they’ll be facing the Timbers at PGE Park!

Portland Timbers hosting Veracruz October 10th?

October 1, 2008 by Dave Knows 2 Comments

TimbersWell, that’s what it sounds like:

Guillermo Lara Guadarrama, presidente de los Tiburones Rojos del Veracruz, afirmó que los escualos podría disputar un juego amistoso en los Estados Unidos el próximo 10 de octubre ante un equipo de Portland . . .

I actually kinda know Spanish (unlike French). My rough translation is:

Guillermo Lara Guadarrama, president of the the Red Sharks of Veracruz, confirmed that the squad could play a friendly game in the USA on October 10th against a team from Portland.

One can only assume the team from Portland is the Timbers. There is no official announcement yet though on the Timbers website.

The article goes on to say that this Wednesday (today I presume) the situation will be settled, so stay tuned . . .

After the Portland game Veracruz would be heading to Chicago to play the Fire.
