Portland Korean Food Festival 2015

Portland’s first ever Korean Food Festival takes place Sunday, 11 October 2015, at the Ecotrust building (707 NW Irving) from 1 PM to 6 PM.

In Korean, mukja means “Let’s Eat!” Food is an integral part of Korean culture, but beyond that, it celebrates an evolving identity that we are proud to represent in Portland. Korean dining is often loud, hectic, vibrant and happy—just like the phrase that names it, this festival strives to create a joyful, exciting atmosphere for everybody to enjoy Korean cuisine.

Chefs preparing dishes for the fest include Han Ly Hwang of Kim Jong Grillin, Bo Kwon of Koi Fusion, John Gorham of Toro Bravo, PJ Yang of Bamboo Sushi, Johanna Ware of Smallwares, Rick Gencarelli of Lardo, Peter Cho of Stray Dogs and more!

Festival tickets include food samples and unlimited non-alcoholic beverages (VIP tickets get you early entry and a soju cocktail). Soju cocktails, makgeolli, and beer will be available for purchase.

Visit the festival website for more details. Children under 13 are admitted free with a paying adult.

Clear Creek Distillery Open House (22 November 2014)

November 20, 2014 by Dave Leave a Comment

Apple BrandyClear Creek Distillery (2389 NW Wilson), a Portland artisan spirits pioneer, is hosting an Open House on Saturday, 22 November 2014.

Although we do not offer tours of the distillery, we do occasionally host an Open House, during which we open the production area to visitors. The distillery staff pours samples next to the stills and gives tours throughout the day. Meet the people who transform fruit into brandies, see where we do it, and sample our wares.

Though bourbon is my spirit animal, Clear Creek’s Williams Pear Brandy and Apple eaux de vie are two of my favorite spirits.

This is your rare chance take a tour. No reservations are required. Saturday’s open house runs from 11 AM to 5 PM.

Sign Up Now: Old Timey Bars Kick Ass Bus Tour (14-November-2013)

September 9, 2013 by Dave Leave a Comment

Kick Ass Oregon HistoryDon’t miss the Kick Ass Oregon History Old Timey Bars Kick Ass Bus Tour coming up on November 14, 2013.

Inspired by the recent Old Timey Bars podcast and taking a page from last summer’s Portland Bar Double Decker Bus Tour, the Old Timey Bars Kick Ass Bus Tour begins at the kick ass Jack London Bar, where after priming the Kick Ass Oregon History’s inimitable resident historian Doug Kenck-Crispin will guide us lucky ticket holders onto the Cascadia Cruiser for the tour.

Lucky tourers will:

  • Visit some famous Portland “Ghost Bars” – places that were once thriving, shit kicking palaces of drunkenness, but are no more.
  • Take a field trip to Eastside Distilling, and get a in person distiller’s tour and learn how they make Burnside Bourbon! [It’s like when your fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Snotgrass, took you to the Franz Bakery – but this place has booze!]
  • Get a chance to visit some current Old Timey Bars that just haven’t changed that much in the past few decades – and as we drink in these establishments, we will revel in our own form of “Historic Preservation.”

I’ve already signed up, $30 gets you on board too. Visit OrHistory.com, the home of Kick Ass Oregon History for more details and registration info.
