July 6, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Popina Travel ShowcasePopina Swimwear Boutique in the Pearl District (318 NW 11th) is hosting a series of travel events with the help of experts from the travel site BootsnAll.

The latest Popina Swimwear Boutique Travel Showcase takes place this First Thursday, June 7, 2011 from 6:30pm until 8:30pm. The guest host this month is Jessica Spiegel:

Jessica Spiegel is BootsnAll’s resident Italy expert and writer of WhyGo Italy, an online travel guide. Jessica has been traveling in Italy for over 10 years and writing the WhyGo Italy travel guide for almost five years. Her special areas of expertise include trip logistics (especially train travel) and helping first timers to Italy. The only thing she likes as much as being in Italy is talking about Italy, so come with your Italy questions and get insider info on all things Italy travel.

Learn how to escape the cubicle, chat travel with the BootsnAll Travel crew, plan your next getaway with Popina’s retro-inspired swimwear, and enjoy a free beer, courtesy of Kona Brewing! Oh, and don’t forget the giveaways, which this month include two first class upgrades on Alaska Airlines, Alaska Airline travel vouchers, and an Ellington travel bag.

Find more details and RSVP on the Facebook Event page.

Bastille Day Festival in the Pearl (9-July-2011)

July 6, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Bastille DayThe 9th Annual Bastille Day Festival takes place Saturday, July 9, 2011, from noon until 8pm at Jamison Square Park in the Pearl District. Admission is free.

The Fête de la Bastille commemorates the storming of the Bastille Prison on le quatorze juillet, 1789. The Portland celebration features the 7th Annual Portland Waiters Race, musical acts, French food and wine and a themed market, pétanque demonstrations and lessons, a singing of La Marseillaise, and a Jardin of Wine and Beer.

If you make it to this festival, I recommend the Jardin of Wine and Beer. The trick though, is that this fest takes place the same day as the Mississippi Avenue Street Fair. Fortunately Pix Patisserie (3901 D N Williams) also throws a Fête de la Bastille, and has scheduled theirs for July 16th this year – details forthcoming!

PDX Urban Wineries Premiere (12-June-2011)

June 10, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

PDX Urban WineriesThe PDX Urban Wineries Premiere takes place Sunday, June 12, 2011 at The Slate (2001 NW 19th) from 3pm to 6pm.

The PDX Urban Wineries, an association of wineries that are happy to be producing wine in the city of Portland, OR, are ENSO Winery, Grochau Cellars, Helioterra Wines, Hip Chicks Do Wine, Jan-Marc Wine Cellars, Ribbon Ridge Vineyard, Seven Bridges Winery, and the Vincent Wine Company.

The members of PDX Urban Wineries make a variety of different wines, not just Pinot Noir. Many of us make wines from grapes like Syrah, Tempranillo, Pinot Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, among others, as well as unique red and white wine blends. Wines meant to be enjoyed immediately in everyday situations, and wines meant to age in your cellars for your most special occasions.

We want to create an urban winery culture in Portland, where you can bike, bus, cab or even walk to visit our tasting rooms and sample the wines we make. To attend the events we hold. To explore the neighborhoods we’re located in.

Sunday’s premiere features all eight wineries pouring, plus appetizers, and a raffle. Buy tickets online. For more information visit the PDX Urban Wineries website, Facebook page, or follow on Twitter!
