Back Fence PDX (26-May-2011)

May 23, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Back Fence PDXThe Back Fence PDX story telling show returns to the Mission Theater (1624 NW Glisan) this Thursday, May 26, 2011.

Story telling show? How’s that work?:

Our Back Fence Storytelling event is the kissing cousin to San Francisco’s Porchlight Storytelling Series. It is an evening with seven people telling true, unmemorized ten-minute stories based on the month’s theme. The stories must not have been performed publicly prior to their Back Fence PDX telling.

Heather and have had a great time at all the Back Fence PDX productions we’ve been to. For one thing free cupcakes from Saint Cupcake make the rounds at intermissions. The story tellers are always courageous and their stories are often amusing, always entertaining, and sometimes gut wrenching or cringe inducing – you really don’t know what to expect!

The theme of this particular show is HOT AS SHIT or MISFIT?, and the lineup includes:

ROD ENGLERT – Blood Spatter Expert

ZACHARY SCHOMBURG – Scary, No Scary + Octopus Books

MOE BOWSTERN – Fisherwoman + Former anarcho-activist

ERIC SCHEUR – Animator for TV Commercials

APRIL WOLFE – Snap Judgment + Comedy Duo: Just Desperation

But that’s not all!

YOU can put your name in for our super exciting LIGHTNING ROUND with celebrity guest SABRINA MILLER from Cascadia FM! FIVE randomly drawn audience members will have a chance to strut their narrative stuff by doing their best to tell an entire HOT AS SHIT story in just ONE MINUTE!

And don’t miss the Popina Swimwear fashion show at 7:15!

Reserve your tickets now for $12, and bring cash (for everyone’s convenience) to the show to claim them! A few non-reserved tickets will be available at the door for $15. The show is 21 and over only. Doors will open at 6:30pm for food and drink and chair claiming, fashion show at 7:15pm, and the show starts at 7:30pm.

Samira

And Kalilah!

Finally and fabulously, we have the debut performance of …

Plus one player to be named later! Building suspense! Can you feel the excitement? It’s electric 😀

Ye gods, such variety! Old friends! New friends! Each one a fantastic dancer, and each one looks forward to dancing for you, noble Portlander. Yes you. And other noble Portlanders too, of course, but really. You should join us. Forsooth, it shall be off the hook, yo. Come get some of our awesomeness!

As always, the show is freeeeeeeeeeee!

As always, the show is fabulous!

Join Karissa, the Ringleader of Offbeat Belly Dance (pictured to the right), and the other fabulous dancers at the show Friday night.

Individually, the members of the Offbeat Belly Dance collective perform at shows throughout the Portland area, but on the 3rd Friday of the month they come together at the Blue Monk to perform in a rollicking belly dance revue. One of the things that makes it offbeat, is that the dancers choose whatever kind of music they like. Karissa tells me this has included traditional Middle Eastern music, zydeco, AC/DC, Strauss, The Pogues, hip hop, jazz, blues, Old Crow Medicine Show, the Spice Girls, and just about everything else.

The shows are free, and go from about 7pm until 10pm.

Visit OffbeatBellyDance.com for more information. You can also become a fan on Facebook, and follow the genre-defying, good timing gang of belly dancers in Portland OR, w/Karissa as ringmaster/carnival barker/propagandiston on Twitter at @OffbeatBelly

On Thursday, May 11, 1950, at a farmhouse just outside of McMinnville, Ore., Evelyn Trent went out to feed her chickens and rabbits behind the farmhouse where she and her husband Paul lived. While attending to her chores, Evelyn was astonished to see a large, metallic looking, disc-shaped object hovering silently in the sky. After a little scrambling as they looked for their trusty Kodak camera, they both ran back outside. Paul Trent clicked off two snapshots. These photos are still considered to be some of the most credible images of UFOs to date.

In honor of the Trents and their sighting, McMenamins began the annual UFO Festival which features both serious and fun for believers and skeptics alike. [more]
