OMSI Science PubOMSI presents Science Pub Portland: Wildlife Rescue – Photography on Tuesday, 15 March 2016 at the Empirical Theater at OMSI (1945 SE Water Ave.).

Award-winning wildlife photographer Suzi Eszterhas takes us into the world of wildlife rescue. With her adorable and powerful imagery, Suzi tells us the heartwarming stories of special hospitals and centers around the world working to rescue some of the world’s most amazing animals. From fluffy joeys at the Koala Hospital in Australia, to cheeky orangutan babies at Orangutan Orphanage of Borneo, to goofy sloths at the Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica, and scaly pangolins at a special rescue facility in Vietnam, Suzi’s show is guaranteed to make all ages oow and aah. Book signing immediately following.

Suzi is one of the only women in her competitive, adventure-filled industry. Based in California, Suzi spends several months each year in the field, photographing animals from the poles to the tropics. Her photographs have been published in over 100 magazine cover and feature stories in publications such as TIME, Smithsonian, BBC Wildlife, GEO, Popular Photography, Ranger Rick, and National Geographic Kids. Suzi is a very dedicated conservationist and lends her images and expertise to help raise funds and awareness for several environmental organizations around the globe. She also leads photography tours around the world.

Presenter Suzi Eszterhas is also the author of four books for children. Visit www.suzieszterhas.com to learn more.

The Portland Science Pub takes place monthly at the Empirical Theater at OMSI. Check in at the theater entrance to reserve your seat (doors open at 5 PM) – there’s a $5 suggested admission. The Empirical Café will be open, but OMSI’s restaurant Theory is closed on 15 March. You can take food and drinks into the theater with you.

Parking is free for the event, but OMSI is mere steps away from the Tilikum Crossing buses, streetcar, and MAX; and only a few blocks from the Hawthorne Bridge’s multiple bus lines.

Chowder Challenge (20 February 2016)

February 16, 2016 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

Chowder ChallengeLompoc Brewing‘s 10th annual Chowder Challenge takes place Saturday, 20 February 2016, at the Lompoc Fifth Quadrant (3901 N Williams).

Admission to the competition is free. Attendees 12 and older can purchase sample trays for $10 to participate in the tasting. All proceeds will be donated to the Community Transitional School, which provides educational services to homeless and at-risk children.

This blind tasting competition features New England-style chowder entries from Lompoc Beer 5th Quadrant, Burnside Brewing Co, Cascade Brewing Barrel House, D’S BAR, Farm House Cafe, Pelican Brewing Company, Produce Row Cafe, Saraveza, Sports on Tap, Stormbreaker Brewing, Uptown Market and Widmer Brothers Brewing. The top vote-getter will be named the People’s Choice Winner and will be awarded the Chowder Cup. Prizes will also be awarded to the first two runners-up.

The reputation of the New Old Lompoc’s clam chowder was the motivation behind the original Chowder Challenge. The New Old Lompoc restaurant on NW 23rd Ave. won the inaugural Chowder Cup; the Morrison Hotel stole it away in the following year, but it was wrested back by the New Old Lompoc at the next four events. In 2013, with the New Old Lompoc out of the competition while being rebuilt, the Ice Axe Grill swooped in and took the cup. In 2014, the New Old Lompoc – revived as the Lompoc Tavern – returned the cup to its original hands, and won again in 2015.

The all-ages Chowder Cup festivities include a beer garden (naturally), live music, and a raffle.
