Of course Elko, Nevada is fabulous but the real reason we drove 11 hours (of which Heather drove all but 15 miles) to the small Northern Nevada cow and mining town was to visit my brother Steve, and his family.

Meanwhile, follow Heather’s Twitterings of our trip, and visit my brother’s branch of the Dave Knows empire to learn all about living in Fabulous Elko, Nevada: Dave Knows: Elko!

High Country News talks to Portlanders about transportation options

October 13, 2008 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

High Country News, an independent news organization that reports on the West’s natural resources, public lands, and changing communities asked people on the street in Portland to talk about why they’re not driving a car. Portlanders obliged:

Portland’s commuting stats are compared Phoenix, which has followed a different approach to development:

About 13 percent of Portland’s population uses public transportation, 5 percent walks, and 5 percent uses bikes and other alternative modes. Ten percent carpools and 61 percent is still stuck behind the wheel, driving alone. Compare these figures to the Phoenix statistics: 73 percent has a solo commute, 16 percent carpools, 4 percent uses public transportation, 2 percent walks and 2 percent uses bikes and other alternative means.

May 18th, 1980 was a long time ago

sthelens200.jpgI was 8 years old. The West Hills blocked our view of Mt. Saint Helens, even standing on the berm in our backyard. On that day, however, we could see the massive plume of ash rising 12 miles (19 km) above what was left of the mountain.

That was 28 years ago today.

Later that summer white stuff fell from the sky in Portland and we ran inside to tell our dad it was snowing. It wasn’t snow of course. We collected ash in boxes, imagining we would make a million dollars selling it to tourists. Alas, the tourists were tough customers.
