Omsi Science PubBlue Revolution: A Water Ethic for America is the topic of of the next OMSI Science Pub on Tuesday, November 15, 2011:

Americans see water as abundant and cheap: we turn on the faucet and out it gushes, for less than a penny a gallon. We use more water than any other culture in the world, much to quench what’s now our largest crop – the lawn. Yet most Americans cannot name the river or aquifer that flows to our taps, irrigates our food, and produces our electricity. And most don’t realize these freshwater sources are in deep trouble.

Journalist Cynthia Barnett, author of Blue Revolution: Unmaking America’s Water Crisis, is the presenter.

This science pub takes place at the Mission Theater (1624 NW Glisan) from 7pm until 9pm, but arrive early (5pm doors open) to secure your beer, grub, and a seat! There’s a $5.00 suggested donation/cover charge. Minors with adults are welcome, otherwise this event is 21 and over.

Omsi Science PubAdventures of a Climate Scientist in the Age of Politics and Punditry is the topic of of the next OMSI Science Pub on Monday, November 7, 2011:

Despite reports to the contrary, overwhelming evidence shows that our weird weather averages out to a warming climate, and pundits and politicians cannot change the fundamental physics that the human-caused rise of CO2 and other greenhouse gases has a warming effect. But arguing about physics turns attention away from constructive responses to a changing climate . . .

At this Science Pub, well-known geoscientist Richard Alley will talk about the science of climate change and his work with entities such as the US government and the UN/IPCC, and just how one navigates this hotbed of scientific research in a politically charged environment.

This science pub takes place at the Bagdad Theater (3702 SE Hawthorne) from 7pm until 9pm, but arrive early (5pm doors open) to secure your beer, grub, and a seat! There’s a $5.00 suggested donation/cover charge. Minors with adults are welcome, otherwise this event is 21 and over.

October 24, 1992: OMSI Opens on the Eastside

October 24, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

OMSIThe new Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) opened to the general public on Saturday, October 24, 1992 (The Oregonian, 25 October 1992).

The $40 million, 210,000 square-foot museum on the east banks of the Willamette River between the Marquam and Hawthorne Bridges is three times larger than its predecessor. Portland General Electric donated the 18.5 acre lot, the former location of a sawdust-fired power plant, to the museum. The smokestack and turbine building of the old plant are incorporated into the new museum complex.

Two years under constructions, the new OMSI, complete with 315-seat OMNIMAX Theater and 200-seat planetarium, replaced the then 35-year-old complex near the Zoo.

In 1994 OMSI took possession of the submarine USS Blueback, and began offering tours that spring.
