Lives of Women Citizens History PubJoin historian Kimberley Jensen for a special history pub, Lives of Women Citizens: Pioneering Women in Public Service on Monday, August 29, 2011 at the Bagdad Theater (3702 SE Hawthorne):

Historian Kimberly Jensen will provide an illustrated overview of women and citizenship in Oregon, giving context for a conversation among the pioneering women public servants and young women who have interviewed them over the summer. Reflecting on their interviews, the panel will engage in conversation about the history and future of women in Oregon politics. They will address questions such as: What constitute “women’s issues” in politics? What is the definition of a “feminist” politician? What defines a citizen? Is that definition different for men and women, and should it be? How are these issues different for women of different ethnic backgrounds? The audience will also be invited to ask questions.

Other participants include Gretchen Kafoury, former legislator; Norma Paulus, former Secretary of State of Oregon; Avel Louise Gordly, former legislator; and Kathryn Harrison, former Chairwoman of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. The program is presented by Century of Action and the Center for Women, Politica and Policy at Portland State University.

Doors open at 6pm, show starts at 7pm. Admission is free, and minors are welcome with a parent or guardian.

Kick Ass Oregon History Vol 3 #2: Civil Defense Part 1 – Operation Green Light

August 26, 2011 by Dave Leave a Comment

Kick Ass Oregon History is the latest series of podcasts from the enthusiastic historians behind ORHistory.com.

Volume 3 #2 dropped yesterday: Civil Defense Part 1 – Operation Green Light:

In 1955 Portland’s ambitious Civil Defense program initiated “Operation Green Light” and tried to evacuate ALL of Portland’s Downtown to the suburbs. FAST.

Featuring an interview with Portland Mayor Sam Adams!

Go listen!

The brains behind this Kick Ass project are the crack hustlers of Oregon History Doug Kenck-Crispin and Andy Lindberg. Doug is a graduate student studying Public History and Pacific Northwest History at PSU, and Andy, though a Portland native, is currently working as an actor in New York City. Doug does most of the research and writing for the podcasts with input from Andy, who voices the broadcasts with a thespian’s flair.

With the Kick Ass Oregon History podcast they plan to cover just the good stuff: Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll and Earth Shattering, Devastating Destruction.

Ultimately, our goal is to take Oregon History out of the hallowed halls of the academy, get folks excited and enthused about this shared history, and get them out into the state, digging it and experiencing it. Get them to embrace it, and get their boots muddy in the process. It’s all OUR History; nobody owns it.

Visit ORHistory.com and stay tuned to @Oregon_History on Twitter for further details on specific episodes and the series. Catch up on missed episodes at the Kick Ass Oregon History archives.
