OMSI Science Pub: Reconnecting with Life (21-June-2012)

June 18, 2012 by Dave Leave a Comment

Omsi Science PubReconnecting with Life: Biomimicry and the Nature Principle is the topic of a special Thursday night OMSI Science Pub on June 21, 2012 at the Bagdad Theater (3702 SE Hawthorne):

In his most recent book, The Nature Principle, Richard Louv makes the case that the more technological our society becomes, the more we need nature—not only for our physical and spiritual health but also for our long-term survival. Louv will be in Portland to deliver the opening address of the 2012 Biomimicry Education Summit, held in conjunction with a special Science Pub. The address will connect his call for a “New Nature Movement” with the promise of biomimicry, a new discipline based on the premise that nature’s innovations hold the solutions to our toughest design challenges.

More than simply emphasizing conservation or nature appreciation, Louv advocates that we embrace the reality that we are an interconnected part of the planet and take action to create new and deeper ways of bringing the natural world into all aspects of human life. Similarly, biomimicry offers a hopeful strategy for living gracefully on the earth, as other organisms have done for billions of years. Biomimicry can be a doorway to the natural world for technology enthusiasts and a window for nature-lovers into technological and sustainable solutions to pressing problems. As we strive to bring nature into our cities, schools, workplaces—so too must we bring it into our design processes and technology itself.

Through a nature-balanced existence—driven by sound economic, social, and environmental solutions—the human race can and will thrive. This timely, inspiring, and important message will give audience members renewed hope while challenging them to rethink the way we live.

This event begins at 7pm but arrive early to secure your beer, grub, and a seat! There’s a $5.00 suggested donation/cover charge. Minors with adults are welcome, otherwise this event is 21 and over.

Happy Mount Saint Helens Day 2012!

Mt St Helens

Thirty-two years ago today, Mount Saint Helens blew its top. I was eight and saw the massive plume of ash from our backyard berm in Portland.

Heather was living on the East Coast in 1980, so her memories of the eruption are from National Geographic. However since she’s moved here we’ve made a few pilgrimages – in 2008, and also in 2010.

Two years ago, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary, OregonLive collected a bunch of stories about the eruption: Mount St. Helens eruption: 30 years later. Check out the Columbian‘s coverage too. And don’t miss my 2008 reminiscences on this very blog.

OMSI Science Pub: Oregon’s Summer Resident Gray Whales (15-May-2012)

Omsi Science PubOregon’s Summer Resident Gray Whales: Unleashing a Well-Kept Secret is the title of Tuesday, May 15, 2012 OMSI Science Pub at the Mission Theater (1624 NW Glisan):

Few people realize that there is a pod of about 70 gray whales that spends the summer off the Pacific Northwest coast. These whales spend the winter around Baja but have figured out that they don’t have to migrate all the way to Alaska for the summertime; instead, they stay and feed in the waters off Oregon. At this Science Pub, find out about the individual whales that consistently come back each summer, their personalities, what they eat, and the research being done to record and preserve them.

Presenter Carrie Newell is a professor of marine biology at Lane Community College and is a gray whale researcher who hosts whale watching tours off Depoe Bay.

The science begins at 7pm but arrive early (5pm doors open) to secure your beer, grub, and a seat! There’s a $5.00 suggested donation/cover charge. Minors with adults are welcome, otherwise this event is 21 and over.

National Park WeekNational Park Week takes place April 21 through April 29, 2012. Admission is free at all 397 national parks during the celebration.

Looking for something fun, free, and fantastic to do with family and friends? Head out to America’s national parks where millions of stars light up the dark night sky, deer and antelope (and a few other critters!) play on the wide open range, and history is an unbelievable experience, not an exam.

The national park closest to Portland is Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, but the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park on the North Coast isn’t too far!

Visit NationalParkWeek.org and the National Park Service website for more details.
