A pair of beer festivals, amongst other amusements this weekend – not bad, summer must be close!

Friday

Zoo Brew 2011Zoo Brew

The fifth annual Zoo Brew takes place Friday, June 3, 2011 from 5pm until 10pm at the Oregon Zoo.

Entertainment at the fest, performing on the the zoo’s main stage, provided by DJ Angry Little Man, Keegan Smith and the Fam, and the Rolling Tones. [more]

The June 2011 edition of Cort and Fatboy’s Midnight Movie takes place this Friday, and it’s super: Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut.

Amnesia Single Hop Fest 2011Amnesia Single Hop Fest

The first annual Amnesia Single Hop Fest takes place Saturday, June 4, 2011 at Amnesia Brewing (832 N Mississippi).

The New School explains: “On Saturday June 4th Amnesia Brewing will host a mini beer fest dedicated to one hop beers. These are beers made with just one variety of hop throughout the brewing process from bittering to finishing.” [more]

With the wide variety of entries, we will have something for every Portlander. From traditional marching bands and flood-lit floats, to glow-in-the-dark umbrellas and hand-built entries, you’ll see the best of Portland’s diverse community groups and entries from the surrounding Northwest region. Oregon State Parks Day 2011Oregon State Parks Day 2011 is Saturday, June 4. Enjoy free park day-use parking, and free camping (for Saturday night, regular campsites only).

Several parks within a couple hours of Portland are hosting special events:

Champoeg State Parks Day – Champoeg State Heritage Area. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Free camping & day-use parking. Tours of 1860s Kitchen Garden and Old Champoeg townsite. Junior Ranger program.

Stub Stewart State Parks Day & National Trails Day – L.L. Stub Stewart State Park. Lupine Festival at the Hilltop Day-use Area. The North Face Explore Your Parks. Be active, be outdoors!

Silver Falls State Parks Day & Foot Race – Silver Falls State Park. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Begin the day with a brisk dash over the creek and through the woods in our Annual 5K Foot Race and Youth Development Run. 11:30 a.m. Free BBQ at the Lodge. 2 p.m. History tour.

Fort Stevens State Parks Day Razor Clamming – Fort Stevens State Park. 7:30 a.m. on the beach by the Peter Iredale shipwreck. Program on how to dig for razor clams covers regulations and digging techniques. Limited number of clam guns and shovels provided. Diggers over age 14 must have a valid Oregon shellfish license.

May 22, 1902: Crater Lake National Park Created

Crater Lake National Park was officially designated with a bill signed by President Theodore Roosevelt on May 22, 1902.

The park encompasses over 180 thousand acres and is the sixth oldest National Park in the country.

The focal point of the park, of course, is the lake, which formed 7700 years ago when the volcano Mount Mazama collapsed upon itself. The resulting caldera filled with rain and melted snow over the next few centuries.

Each year the half million visitors to the park also have the opportunity to check out The Pinnacles, camp in pine forests, view amazing sunsets, and behave like dorks (At least that’s what Heather and I did on our visit in 2009).
