June 12: Cirque du Cycling

June 8, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

As if there wasn’t already enough to do on Saturday, June 12th, the 2010 Cirque du Cycling takes place on North Mississippi Avenue, from 11am until 7pm.

The Cirque is a street festival, a circus, a bike race and a parade – and a benefit for Albina Youth Opportunity School.

The schedule (emphasis mine):

11-1:30pm :: Grand Central Fun Zone for kids (714 N. Fremont)
12:30pm :: Family Ride registration + bike safety activities
1:30pm :: Family ride departs
1:30pm :: Event opens along Mississippi
2:00pm :: Beer gardens open
3:00pm-3:30pm :: Art Bike Parade
5:00pm -7:00pm :: Two-way street (criterium) racing
7:00pm :: Event closes

The fair is free, (except for the criterium race), but you must register for the rides or parade on the website.

I missed this event last year, but I hope to make it in time to enjoy the beer garden and to watch the criterium – there are often spectacular crashes at these races, it’s just like NASCAR, but without the rednecks and fiery explosions.

Alberta Art Hop 2010

May 16, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

The theme of the 11th annual Alberta Art Hop was ABC: Art Builds Community. From 11am to 6pm yesterday 15 blocks of NE Alberta were closed to car traffic and filled instead with more than 150 artists, craftspeople, music, dance and theater performances.

Art on Alberta

The Hop is organized each year by Art on Alberta:

Art on Alberta was established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2000 to meet the cultural and coordination needs of the arts-related organizations emerging on Portland’s NE Alberta Street.

Like last year, the weather was fantastic. Heather and I trekked out to Alberta in the early afternoon to enjoy the event (though we spent most of our time at the Alleyway Cafe with friends enjoying a beer). Here are some of the things we saw . . .

On Saturday, the Timbers face AC St. Louis (1-5-0, 3pts) for the second time this season. Portland defeated AC St. Louis 3-0 at PGE Park on April 22, using a pair of goals and an assist from Pore in the victory. It will be the last scheduled visit to the Rose City this season for AC St. Louis, which will host the final two games of the regular-season series against Portland in St. Louis. [more]

Sunday ParkwaysNortheast Sunday Parkways (first of 2010!)

The first Sunday Parkways of 2010 takes place Sunday, May 16th in Northeast Portland.

A Portland Sunday Parkway is an opportunity to spend a pleasant summery Sunday morning and afternoon (10am to 3pm) winding your way on bike or foot through mostly residential streets free of car traffic. The routes take you from one park to the next, where you can check out the vendors and demonstrations, or just sit down and relax. For the Northeast event, the parks include Wilshire, Alberta, Woodlawn, and Fernhill. [more]

Heather and I have participated in two Portland Sunday Parkways – we walked the very first one in North Portland in 2008, and last year we rode bikes in the Southeast Portland event. We highly recommend participating.

For Art Hop 2010, we plan to have several murals painted and displayed at multiple venues along NE Alberta Street. AoA is partnering with the neighborhood nonprofit organization Community Energy Project. We have also chosen artist/muralist, Rodolfo Serna, who will work with local schools and youth organizations to design murals to be painted by those parties, as well as the attending public, on Art Hop day. All murals will be painted on plywood and mounted later to building walls with the help of another NE Alberta Street nonprofit organization, Oregon Tradeswomen.
