July 18: East Portland Sunday Parkways

Sunday ParkwaysThe third Sunday Parkways of 2010 takes place this Sunday, July 18th in East Portland.

Take the opportunity to spend a pleasant summery Sunday morning and afternoon (10am to 3pm) winding your way on bike or foot through the mostly residential, car free, streets of East Portland. The routes take you from one park to the next, where you can check out the vendors and demonstrations, or just sit down and relax. This weekend’s event connects Ed Benedict (and the East Portland Exposition), Bloomington and Lents Parks, plus the I-205 and Springwater multi-use paths.

Heather and I enjoyed the North Portland Sunday Parkways last month. We walked the very first one in North Portland in 2008, and last year we rode bikes in the Southeast Portland event.

July 9-12: Mississippi Street Fair, NW 23rd Street A-Fair, Bastille Day, and Soccer

A hell of a weekend is in store – summer like weather accompanies Portland’s largest street fair, one of the largest French themed festivals on the West Coast, and soccer up the wazoo – on film, on the world stage, and at PGE Park!

The 2010 Mississippi Avenue Street Fair takes place Saturday, July 10th from 10am until 9pm. On North Mississippi Avenue, of course. This is my favorite Portland street fair. It’s compact, only five blocks from Skidmore to Fremont, so you’re guaranteed to run into your friends amongst the 30,000 or so other festival goers. [more]

Bastille DayBastille Day Festival in the Pearl

The Fête de la Bastille commemorates the storming of the Bastille Prison on le quatorze juillet, 1789. In Portland we celebrate with the 6th Annual Portland Waiters Race, musical acts, French food and wine and a themed market, pétanque demonstrations and lessons, a singing of La Marseillaise, and a Jardin of Wine and Beer [more]

Looks like there’s yet another event for you this Saturday, July 10th, 2010: the NW 23rd Avenue Street A-Fair takes place between Hoyt and Johnson on NW 23rd from 11am until 8pm (other events this weekend include the Mississippi Avenue Street Fair, Bastille Day in the Pearl, and several soccer options!). Soccer in PortlandSoccer Weekend in Portland – Pelada, World Cup, and the Timbers!

If you like soccer, you’re going to love this weekend. Multiple soccer related events take place Friday through Sunday in Soccer City USA . . . The film Pelada, about soccer away from the bright light and manicured field, debuts in the Rose City on Friday, July 9th at the Hollywood Theater (4122 NE Sandy). The Portland Timbers host Miami FC on Saturday (don’t miss the Timbers Army Beer, Bachelors, and History Tailgate starting at 3pm!), and Club Atlas on Sunday. And of course the World Cup Final takes place Sunday at 11:30am! [more]

NAOBFNorth American Organic Brewers Festival 2010

The 6th annual North American Organic Brewers Festival takes place this Friday through Sunday, June 25th through 27th, at Overlook Park (Yellow Line will take you right there!).

This is my favorite summer brewers festival. It does not (yet . . .) get nearly as crowded as the Big One, and it’s not as expensive as the Pearl One. And so far (this will be the 6th NAOBF) the crowds aren’t nearly as obnoxious. [more]

TimbersPortland Timbers vs Tampa Bay Rowdies

The FC Tampa Bay Rowdies make their inaugural trip to Portland this Sunday, June 27th to take on the Portland Timbers at PGE Park. Kick off is an early 5pm.

The Timbers are coming off their league first road win in a long time, last Saturday at Minnesota. The Timber also beat the Kitsap Pumas this week in a US Open Cup match. The Seattle Flounders visit Portland next Wednesday, June 30th in a third round matchup.

TriMet Mobile Debuts

TriMetTriMet has launched a mobile-friendly site for riders using smartphones: Trimet Mobile (m.trimet.org)

Now, if you have a mobile device with the right capabilities, you have yet another option to find schedules, arrivals, and assorted TriMet transit information.

TriMet Mobile includes the following rider tools:

  • TransitTracker arrival times
  • Trip Planner
  • Service Alerts
  • Route and system maps
  • Nearby stop look-up (coming soon)
  • Schedules (coming soon)

The TriMet App Center has a fairly comprehensive list of other applications, tools, and websites. (And of course you can always call 238-RIDE.)
