Walktober PDX 2012

October 5, 2012 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

WalktoberWalktober PDX 2012 runs from Saturday, October 6 through Halloween (the greatest walking holiday of the year).

Everyone is a pedestrian at some point in the day, whether it is by walking, rolling, or strolling. People walk for a thousand reasons: to get to the bus or MAX, to get to the store, to walk the dog, to commute to work, to spend time with friends, to unwind after a long day, to explore a neighborhood, to get to school, and many more reasons . . .
Walktober was created with the hope of helping people throughout the region find new ways to walk, and find places to walk and people to enjoy walking with.

Inspired by Pedalpalooza, three weeks of bikey fun in Portland held every June, the Willamette Pedestrian Coalition conceived Walktober to promote walking as a fun, healthy, ubiquitous activity in the Portland metro region.

Highlights include the Walk at Tryon Creek State Park on the first day of Walktober, October 6; the Walktober – Sellwood Pub Crawl on the 23rd; and the Streetcar Exhibit Walk on October 26.

Visit the Walktober website for the full calendar of walks, and feel free to add your own (follow these tips in creating your public walk).

Swift WatchChapman Vaux’s Swift Watch 2012 – final weekend!

Every September thousands of Vaux’s Swifts come to Portland. After spending their day eating bugs, the Swifts coalesce in Northwest Portland, flying in a giant undulating swirl in the sky above the school. Around sunset the swirl gets more compact, like a ground pepper tornado, and begins disappearing, measure by measure, down the chimney. On the lawn below hundreds of Portlanders stare mesmerized at the sky, from the comfort of lawn chairs and blankets. Boos erupt when opportunistic Peregrine falcons get lucky. [more]
