Portland Saturday MarketThe winter long nightmare of no access to hippy candles, knit bags, and tie-dyed t-shirts is over! Portland Saturday Market‘s 38th season begins this Saturday, March 5, 2011.

The special kick off event runs all weekend, both Saturday and Sunday, and features five daily $25 Saturday Market gift card giveaways, two special grand prize gift baskets which include four tickets to Portland’s Lan Su Chinese Garden and a $100 gift card, and a kids parade at 2pm both days, led by Circus Artemis jugglers, stilt walkers, and musicians.

As per usual the market also features dozens of food carts, live music, and hundreds of vendors every weekend through December 24th!

Book Review [and Giveaway!]: Joyride – Pedaling Toward a Healthier Planet

January 3, 2011 by Dave Knows 5 Comments

Mia Birk has written a book about her travails and travels working to make bicycling an integral part of the transportation system and culture of American cities and towns: Joyride: Pedaling Toward a Healthier Planet.

In the book she relates personal stories and struggles of her several decades experience convincing first herself, then bureaucrats, planners, engineers, and the public at large (including her own family) that bicycling is not just kids stuff. The stories are inspirational; relating both tiny and big steps forward through the morass of politics and public opinion.

Portland is the setting for many of her stories, as Birk was the Bicycle Program Manager for the city from 1993-1999. Portland’s bicycle culture and infrastructure are now regarded as shining examples of what is possible in American cities. One wonders where we would be now if it weren’t for Mia Birk’s work. Any one interested in Portland’s bicycling history and culture will enjoy this book. Activists and bicyclists from anywhere will enjoy the inspirational stories and possibly learn a thing or two about promoting bicycling in their own cities.

See Mia Birk talk about her book at Powell’s Books (1005 W Burnside) on Tuesday, January 4 2011 at 7:30pm!

Giveaway!

For a chance to win a copy of Joyride: Pedaling Toward a Healthier Planet, share one thing you like about bicycling in the comments below. On Friday, January 7 2011 at noon I will draw the name of one commenter randomly and send them a copy of the book for free!

Free Bike-Delivered Neighborhood Welcome Bags from SmartTrips

December 18, 2010 by Dave Knows 6 Comments

SmartTrips goodie bagDid you know that you might be eligible to receive a free bag of transportation goodies from the City of Portland’s SmartTrips program?

SmartTrips is dedicated to offering transportation resources to Portlanders who have moved recently.

It’s a pilot project, so currently only those who have lived in one of the following zip codes for six months or less are eligible to receive the transportation resource materials: 97202, 97206, 97214, 97215.

The goodie bag, full of maps and guidebooks, also comes with – your choice – a chocolate bar from Portland’s Moonstruck Chocolate or an All Day TriMet ticket.

And of course, the goodie bag is delivered by bicycle!

Visit the SmartTrips website for more information on Portland transportation options and this pilot program. For background on SmartTrips, check out Neighhorhood Note’s profile of the program.

Top 5 Portland Neighborhoods for Car Free Living

December 16, 2010 by Dave Knows 12 Comments

Good places to live in Portland without a car, a compendium of Census data, Walkscores, transit stats, and city surveys on the Portland Afoot wiki, is a great starting point for someone considering going car free in Portland.

Perusing it got me thinking about my own experience. Much of the time without a car, I’ve lived all over this fine city (I’ve called the following Portland neighborhoods home for at least one year-long stint: Reed, Creston-Kenilworth, Buckman, Goose Hollow, Hosford-Abernathy, Mt. Scott, Richmond, Downtown, and Boise). So I consider myself something of a car free Portland authority. I not so humbly submit to you my:

Portland NeighborhoodsTop 5 Portland Neighborhoods for Car Free Living

  1. Downtown
  2. Nob Hill
  3. Goose Hollow
  4. Pearl District
  5. Sunnyside (aka Belmont Neighborhood)

The key elements for car free livability for me are a full service grocery store within easy walking distance, transit, and eating and drinking establishments. (The first two are the reason I can’t place the Boise neighborhood, where I currently live, among this company, though it’s in my top 10 for drinking establishments!).

What are your criteria for car free livability? I know those who bicycle can rely less on transit and close grocery stores. Which neighborhoods would be in your top 5?
