Hot dog champ Chestnut visits Lincoln City, eats obscene amount of ribs

July 16, 2007 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

RibsChinook Winds Casino hosted the 2007 World Rib Eating Championship Sunday. Barely two weeks after establishing a new world record of 66 hot dogs in 12 minutes, Joey “Jaws” Chestnut successfully defended his title in Lincoln City; eating over 7 1/2 pounds of pork ribs in 12 minutes.

Oregonlive.com has most of the disgusting details.

The Chinook Winds Casino website has the video.

Missed the beerfest?

Belmont StationOver the last three days I watched the Copa America final at Kells, attended two Timbers games and two Bastille Day festivals, and spent an afternoon and evening at the Mississippi Avenue Street Fair. That was just the fun stuff. Despite my best effort to squeeze a few more hours out of the weekend, the Portland International Beerfest eluded me.

But fear not. If you’re jonesing for some sour beer (sour in a good way!), Belmont Station has your “Puckerfest” fix:

New Belgium – La Folie (Flemish sour)
New Belgium – Eric’s Lips of Faith (sour peach ale)
Issiquah Brewhouse (Rogue Ales) – Sour Frog (Arlen Harris’ last brew!)
Cantillon Fou Foune (apricot lambic)
Bj’s Jantzen Beach – 2005 Portlander Weisse (a sour German-style wheat beer)
Brouwerij Verhaeghe – Echt Kriekenbier (sour cherry ale)

According to the Belmont Station Beer Forum blog, there will be additional, yet to be announced kegs, and bottled beer specials too, from today through Sunday the 22nd.

Timbers at top of the league after 4-1 defeat of the Victory

July 15, 2007 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

TimbersThe Victory finally got their first goal ever against the Timbers, going up 1-0 early, but Cameron Knowles equalized and David Hague came in as a second half sub to give the team a hat trick and an emphatic win.

Despite having played fewer games than the other top clubs, the Timbers are the points leader.

However, a full half of the team’s 30 points have come against the woefully outmatched California Victory, and tonight’s game was the last time the teams will meet this season. Of the Timbers remaining 14 games, 9 are on the road.

This (Thirsty) Thursday the Timbers take on the Vancouver Whitecaps at PGE Park. The game is being televised on Fox Sports Northwest.

Chuck Palahniuk interview on The Hour

July 15, 2007 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Chuck PalahniukThe Hour is a current affairs show on Canadian television which features long (by American TV standards) interviews with actors, politicians, journalists, etc. One recent interview was with the writer Chuck Palahniuk. I doubt he still lives in Portland, so I’m not sure if he can be classified as a “Portland writer”, but I do know he lived here, and worked for Freightliner, when he wrote his successful debut novel Fight Club.

Onegoodmove has the interview. True to his reputation Chuck shares a humorous severed bloody arm anecdote around the 9 minute.

The big one is less than two weeks away

Brewers Festival 2007The Oregon Brewers Festival starts Thursday the 26th and runs through Sunday the 29th.

If you prefer drinking beer to standing in lines in ridiculously hot weather, get there early in the day. Taps open at noon so you should start drinking at noon. Arrive at least before 5pm on Thursday or Friday. If you can’t get to the festival by early afternoon on Saturday or Sunday I wouldn’t bother; a few blocks away at the Yamhill Pub the Pabst is only $1 all day Sunday!
