Update: Poutine payoff

August 8, 2007 by Dave Knows 2 Comments

My search for poutine purveyors has produced results:

  • Clyde Common (sometimes: menu varies)
  • Florida Room

My sources for this delectable intelligence are Cuisine Bonne Femme of PortlandFoodAndDrink.com and VJ of AltPortland.com, respectively – Thanks!

Poutine in Portland?

August 8, 2007 by Dave Knows 6 Comments

PoutineWhere can I find poutine in Portland?

Dot’s has jalapeño cheddar (aka “Jolly”) fries, and Oaks Bottom Pub has its “Totchos”, but I need some gravy.

For the uninitiated: Poutine is a French-Canadian concoction consisting of a plate of french fries topped with (fresh, soft, melty) cheese curds, and smothered in brown gravy.

In Quebec, and throughout Canada, you can find poutine at countless cheap to average restaurants, and even some fancy ones. After an evening of beer drinking, diving into a plate of poutine is everything your mind and stomach could ask for.

Please, leave a comment if you know where I can find poutine without having to get my passport renewed!

August 10-12: Crawdads, The Bite, and Bridge Pedal

August 7, 2007 by Dave Knows 2 Comments

The smart set will be watching soccer, but if you get hungry, or need some exercise, there are some options this weekend.

Crawfish FestFriday and Saturday Tualatin is hosting the 57th annual Crawfish Festival.

This event has been on my must-do list for years, but since I am carfree, and Tualatin is miles from nowhere, I have yet to attend. If I *do* somehow get a ride, I hope to be there Saturday by 2:45pm to witness the Crawfish Eating Contest. The record, set in 1970, is an impressive 170 crawfish (tails and claws) in 15 minutes!

There are lots of other things going on at the festival: a pancake breakfast, the Crawfish Festival Criterium, a 5k run, a parade. You can’t go wrong.
Bit of OregonFriday through Sunday the Bite of Oregon will be “celebrating Oregon’s bounty” at Waterfront Park. In years past I’ve not enjoyed this event, but there will be wine and beer, and the Bend restaurant La Rosa Authentic Mexican will be serving up lobster quesadillas. Some of the other items on the menu look good too. There also several stages with live music throughout the weekend.

Sunday morning don’t try to drive through downtown, as it’s the annual Bridge Pedal! If you’ve spent your weekend eating at the festivals above, you’ll need to burn off those extra calories. This is the one day each year you can bike across the Marquam Bridge without breaking your neck or the law.

Darius drives a donk

I’ve new found respect for Darius Miles. Check out his donk:

Freestyle, live, or televised: Great week ahead for soccer aficionados

I’m heading to Pioneer Square at noon Thursday to catch the RedBull Wingers Freestyle Street Squad performance. According to the Pioneer Square calendar,

The Wingers are an Elite group of highly-skilled soccer “street ballers” and freestylers based out of Los Angeles CA. Equally versed as soccer players and entertainers, they possess an arsenal of sick freestyle soccer moves, along with the ability & the appearance that are the essence of street soccer. Wingers members are world travelers who thrive on turning any location or situation into an edgy soccer performance.

So I guess that means they’re the Harlem Globetrotters of soccer (sans the New York Nationals)?

TimbersThen at 7pm Thursday the Timbers take on the Minnesota Thunder at PGE Park. Coming off a 1-1 draw in Minnesota Saturday, the Timbers will want to dominate and score early to keep on top of the standings. Also, it’s Thirsty Thursday!

Chivas vs ClubBack to PGE Park on Friday night, also at 7pm, to watch Club Guadalajara Legends vs. Club America Legends. This match is a showcase of retired players from each team, but the rosters really do include some “legends;” Ramon Ramirez and Alberto Coyote play for the Chivas and Gonzalo Farfan and Isaac Terrazas suit up for Club America. The match is also a fund raiser for the MECha/Latino Club at Tigard High School for scholarships for Latino students.

TimbersAnd can you believe it? Back to PGE Park at 7pm on Saturday too. The Timbers are up against regional rivals Vancouver. The Timbers are out of the Cascadia Cup race due to last week’s loss to Seattle, but still in first place. After a monster trade with Montreal, the Whitecaps will look quite a bit different than the last time we saw (and defeated) them. The Timbers have also since added Matt Taylor from Chivas USA, so this will be a compelling match fraught with unknowns.

EPLWhew! Starting in the wee hours Saturday, and continuing Sunday are the opening matches of the 2007-2008 English Premier League. Lots of good matches to check out.

I think that’s it. Is that enough for you?!
