Portland’s 15 minutes continues unabated

August 4, 2007 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

In April it was the New York Times’ 36 Hours in Portland, Ore. Then in May the LA Times jumped on the bandwagon with a mass-transit trek through Portland’s singular sites (oh, and don’t forget their Pearl paean last December: New Luster in the Pearl District of Portland, Oregon).

Our neighbors to the north have also been publishing a slew of stories about Portland, and Oregon in general.

Now it’s Travel and Leisure’s turn: American Eden.

This article may be the most thorough yet. It covers all the standards (Voodoo Doughnuts, check; Powells, check; Ace Hotel, check . . . you get the idea), but is more fun than the typical POVA pablum. There is an attempt to elucidate some of the factors in Portland’s recent, apparent, renaissance, as “Portland has become a metaphor for enlightened humanism and progressive government, a little pocket of Sweden in the States.” Richard Florida’s The Rise of the Creative Class: And How It’s Transforming Work, Leisure, Community, and Everyday Life (Powells | Library) is mentioned of course.

But what’s missing in these sorts of pieces is an effort to unravel how Portland came to be an “American Eden” (hint: it’s not due to Nike). I think the best explanation is in Robert Putnam’s Bowling Alone: the collapse and revival of American community (Powells | Library). In the populace of Portland there is a strong belief in the ability to form and shape community. Portland’s not “weird,” it’s just that people here have an old-fashioned collective mindset (though “weird” is better for marketing). We reap the benefits in “quality of life” and other intangibles (and more tangibles like improving transit, good beer, great street festivals, and a strong food, art, music, and literary scene). The rest of the country is starting to take notice. I’m usually cynical about these sorts of things, but after the 15 minutes passes I don’t believe Portland will change for the worse ( though hopefully that asinine “Keep Portland Weird” motto will be jettisoned).

Not a bad pub crawl for a New Yorker

Mary loves craft beer. And she writes about that love on her blog, My Life On Craft . . . beer, that is.

She and some friends recently visited Portland, and naturally, a pub crawl ensued.

They visited the New Old Lompoc, Lucky Lab and Laurelwood pubs in NW, then crossed the river and headed up to Mississippi to stop in at Amnesia. Roots in SE was next, followed by the Horse Brass and Belmont Station, and finally the Concordia Ale House in NE.

Reading her chronicle inspired me to contemplate my ideal Portland pub crawl. I would no doubt enjoy the same tour she and her friends embarked on, but being indifferent to New Old Lompoc’s beers, and having an aversion to the childcare-center ambiance of the Laurelwood pubs, I would do some things differently.

But that would depend on several factors. The two most important being the weather, and the time of the year (and hence the available seasonal beers).

Coming soon: Dave’s Hot Summer Day Portland Pub Crawl . . .

2007-2008 NBA schedule is out!

BlazersCasey at the Blazer blog on Oregonlive.com has the schedule, and points out some interesting things:

The Blazers kick off the season on the road on October 30 against the World Champion San Antonio Spurs. And it’s on TNT! That’s national. In fact, they’ve got 11 nationally televised games (six on TNT, five on ESPN) and seven NBATV games.

Looking over the schedule, a few things stand out. The first game against the Sonics is at the Rose Garden on Christmas Day! That’s an awesome way to spend the holiday. It’s also the first game on ESPN.

I bought season tickets (a pair) for my first time this year (like thousands of others when the Blazers won the top pick), so I’ve got lots of planning and negotiating with friends to figure who gets to go to which games. Bribes are welcome.

August 2-5: 5th Ave., RedBull, BBQ, Beer, and of course soccer

I’m moving (from downtown to North Portland) this weekend, so unfortunately I won’t be participating in much of this weekend’s goings ons. Here’s what I’ll be missing . . .

Thursday

TriMetMAX construction on 5th Avenue in Old Town/Chinatown is almost complete, so TriMet’s throwing a party. Here are the details:

  • Local bands and musicians including Autopilot, Siren’s Echo, Hello Damascus and Talkdemonic
  • More than 20 local poets, including Oregon Poet Laureate Lawson Inada, will read poetry celebrating the 10th anniversary of “Poetry in Motion”
  • Graffiti artist Joshua Wallace will paint a 100-foot canvas
  • Area businesses will offer food and a beer garden [emphasis mine] will be available
  • A free shuttle will carry guests between the street fair, First Thursday in the Pearl District and Pioneer Courthouse Square

All of this will be taking place on 5th between Burnside and Glisan, from 5-10pm tonight.

Red Bull IllumeRedBull’s doing some weird stuff at Pioneer Square and 6th Avenue, something they call RedBull Illume. It starts tonight and runs through the 12th. Here’s the description from the Pioneer Square calendar:

This first of its kind international action and adventure sports photography exhibition will offer residents and visitors alike a spectacular street-side “illumination” of indescribable proportions. Red Bull Illume began as a quest to find the fifty best raw moments in action and adventure sports captured by both amateur and professional photographers.

These fifty hand-selected winning images will light up Portland’s main thoroughfare, SW 6th Avenue, as a breathtaking ‘larger than life’ street gallery with the outdoor spectacle of twenty-five 8-foot glass and metal photography display cubes.

Friday

Free watermelons!

Saturday-Sunday

Bones and BrewsRogue’s hosting the 13th annual “Bones and Brew Backyard BBQ” at NW Flanders and 15th. BBQ, 30 microbrews, and live music. A $2 donation gets you in (proceeds go to the Oregon Zoo). Saturday from 11 am to 9 pm; Sunday from 11 am to 7 pm.

Sunday

FA Community ShieldThe one thing I will probably do this weekend is head down to Kells bright and early (7am) Sunday morning to watch the Community Shield game.

Last year’s Premier League champs take on the FA Cup winner, so this year that means Manchester United and Chelsea FC.

Free Watermelon Friday!

Update: There will be no 2009 Mayor’s Tailgate Party (aka Free Watermelon Friday). Commenter Carla called Pioneer Square and was told that due to the state of the economy, the folks from Hermiston won’t make it to Portland this year 🙁

WatermelonThe Hermiston Watermelon Association is making its annual trek to Portland to give away free watermelons at Pioneer Square (and cantaloupes and potatoes too) on Friday. This will be the 17th year in a row.

Like lots of good things in the Rose City, this tradition started when Bud Clark was mayor.

As Frank Harkenrider, a former mayor of Hermiston, describes it, back in 1991 . . .

“I went to City Hall with two pickup load,” Harkenrider said. “That’s where it started, with Bud Clark.” Then Harkenrider let loose with a “whoop, whoop,” using the former call Clark was known for during is campaign for term as mayor of Portland.

If it’s like last year the giveaway will begin at noon, but you might have to endure some politicians’ speeches first.

There is also a watermelon seed spitting contest.
