TimbersFinally, some good news for Timbers fans; we might see some goals the rest of the way.

Timbers sign Alvarez for remainder of 2008 season

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers have signed forward Byron Alvarez, the club’s modern-franchise scoring leader, for the remainder of the 2008 season, it was announced today pending USSF and international clearance.

Festivus (beer) in July

July 22, 2008 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

The lingering morning clouds and slightly cooler temperature today (high of 72!) might put you in the mood for an un-summery beer. But it’s July; unless you have a personal beer cellar, where will you find a wintry ale in the middle of summer?

You’re in luck.

Lucky Lab on Hawthorne is serving up winter ales this month.

And today New Old Lompoc (1616 NW 23rd Ave) is celebrating Festivus in July!

Festivus Celebration with Portland Brewers and an Aluminum Festivus Pole. A spin off of the classic Seinfeld Holiday episode focusing on the brewing industry. The airing of the grievances and the Feats of Strength will be the focal point while sipping traditional Christmas ales.

(Both of these events were brought to my attention by On Tap, the blog of the Oregon Brewers Guild. Support Oregon Brewers!)

Camping close to town with no reservations *again*

July 21, 2008 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Apparently we aren’t the only ones to notice that Portland’s summers are spectacular; every weekend from June through September a street fair or festival or some other event (often with beer garden!) tempts the rain weary Portlander. Last weekend Heather and I pulled ourselves away from several such events; the Portland Highland Games and the International Beerfest, to name just two. We wanted to go camping.

Our last camping trip was a waterlogged experience. This time around the forecast was delightful.

Mile73.comWe packed up our boxed wine, and sundry less important camping gear, and headed towards Mt. Hood. We are risk takers; we don’t believe in reservations. We sneaked out of town Friday thinking we’d snag a site at reservationless Green Canyon (old growth Douglas Fir, pristine Salmon River and vault toilets!), about 5 miles south of Zigzag. Luck was on our side . . . Heather explains.

How Channing Frye spends his summer vacation

July 18, 2008 by Dave Knows 2 Comments

Watching movies.

Since the end of the season Channing has posted quite a few movie reviews on his blog. He’s no Shawn Levy, but he does exhibit the ability to distill his thoughts succinctly.

On Be Kind Rewind:

I came out feeling strange. The only comparison I can make is when you get padded down by security either at a club or at the airport. You just feel like you’ve been taken advantage of. Even though you already knew it was coming, you just feel very awkward afterwards.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull:

WAIT FOR DVD should be stickered at the front of the movie. I mean, really, what the heck it was in 3 words: tacky, corny, and unoriginal.

And furthermore, my popcorn was extremely salty, which also probably made me not like the movie even worse.

Hancock:

I went in there expecting to be disappointed and came out like a little girl with a brand new my little pony. It was that good.

Wanted:

Was poop. I wasn’t feeling it. Yes, the action was cool and Angelina was looking skinnier than ever. It just didn’t keep me interested.

The Dark Night (and Wall-e):

Seriously, if you have to go beg on the side of the street for an extra $10 bucks to go see this movie, do it. Don’t waste time seeing Wall-E, cuz it sucks and was boring. If you don’t like it, I’ll slap you with a spoon.

I think it’s only a matter of time before you see Channing’s blurbs in movie ads.

We picked a hell of weekend to go camping

July 18, 2008 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

I’m off to the hinterlands this weekend for some good ol’ fashioned car camping. We’re hoping to see some old growth forest and to stay dry (we weren’t so lucky last time).

Meanwhile back in and around Portland y’all will be . . .

  • Drinking beer at the Portland International Beerfest
  • Averting your eyes as kilts fly at the Portland Highland Games
  • Kicking over Admiring sandcastles at Sand in the City
  • Listening to the sweet smooth sounds at the Cathedral Park Jazz Festival
  • Dodging arrows at the Robin Hood Festival in Sherwood

And damn, there’s lots of other things going on this weekend too . . .
