Is Sam still your mayor?

January 22, 2009 by Dave Knows 16 Comments

I Am For SamYou wouldn’t know it by media coverage, but not everyone in Portland thinks Sam Adams should resign.

Do you believe the following?

1. Consensual sex between adults does not impact one’s ability to serve in public office;
2. The personal affairs of gay officials face a level of scrutiny that is not equal to that of their heterosexual counterparts;
3. We acknowledge Sam Adams’s dishonesty in this matter and do not endorse it;
4. Sam Adams is the person we want to lead our city.

Then you should visit Sam Is Still My Mayor.

If Sam Adams does end up resigning though, I actually agree with Jack Bog on who might make a good replacement.

Greg Oden is 21!Happy 21st Birthday Gregory Wayne “Greg” Oden, Jr.!

Celebrate for a few days (I recommend your first legal alcoholic beverage be an Oregon beer!), and then treat yourself to a double double, and oh, say 4 blocks against the Bullets Wizards Saturday!

According to Wunderground Portland will be simultaneously experiencing 20-30 mile per hour wind today, and stagnant air.

Stagnant wind

Go figure.

El Blog de Rudy (de Bart King)

January 17, 2009 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

I have a new favorite Trailblazer blog: El Blog de Rudy (not to be confused with el blog de rudy at ADN.es, the newspaper with a Sexo section!)

The blog’s first post in December was merely the (bad) translation into English of a post from Rudy’s Spanish language blog. The Spanish post, ¡Greg Oden es enorme! became ¡Greg Oden is huge!

The blog continued in that vein, with a link to the original Spanish, for the next several posts, but then it got weird(er) . . . some examples:

Now my team heckles my sweaters. This amuses me less than others are.

Sometimes fans say I am like Pistol Pete Maravich. I am not sure about him. He played for the Polish National Team?

Since first being in Portland, I have noticed an oddness. Greg Oden was more anxious in his demeanor at the start of the season. Today, he is more youthful. When I asked him about this, Greg said, “One day you’ll be as old as I am, if you go backward like a crab!”

Then he laughed really hard.

The blog is the brainchild of Bart King (yeah that Bart King).

So yeah, highly recommend.

Earl Blumenauer bikes into the New York Times

January 12, 2009 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

Representative Earl Blumenauer must have a good agent; just over a year ago he and his bicycle were profiled in the Wall Street Journal.

Today it’s the New York Times‘s turn. The article, by Cornelia Dean, also focuses on his bike advocacy:

Mr. Blumenauer, a passionate advocate of cycling as a remedy for everything from climate change to obesity, represents most of Portland in Congress, where he is the founder and proprietor of the 180 (plus or minus)-member Congressional Bicycle Caucus. Long regarded in some quarters as quixotic, the caucus has come into its own as hard times, climate concerns, gyrating gas prices and worries about fitness turn people away from their cars and toward their bikes.
