May 1-2: Cheers to Belgian Beers, Deschutes Portland pub’s birthday, and the Timbers

April 30, 2009 by Dave Leave a Comment

TimbersThe Timbers take on Carolina, again, 7pm Saturday at PGE Park. Come to the Timbers Army Tailgate in the parking lot between SW Taylor and SW Salmon on 18th Ave (behind Cheerful Bullpen) at 4pm for some pre-game fun and bbq.

But first: pub crawl!

I love Belgian beers, so there’s no way I’ll be missing the 3rd annual Cheers to Belgian Beers, which takes place Friday and Saturday, (noon to 10pm each day) at the NW Lucky Lab (1945 NW Quimby).

Every beer available during the fest will have been brewed with the Wyeast 3822, Ingelmunster yeast strain. Each brewery has been randomly assigned color and strength characteristics to aim for, so some of the brewers will be out of their comfort zones. The beers will truly be experimental, and no doubt there will be some fantastic discoveries (and also possibly a few stinkers).

$5 gets you the tasting goblet (required to taste) and tastes are a buck each. Profits from this year’s event will be donated to the Oregon Humane Society. The Oregon Brewers Guild has the full list of beers.

Deschutes Brew PubSaturday from noon-6pm the Deschutes Brewery Portland Pub will be throwing a first anniversary bash. The Beer Here has the details:

Deschutes Brewery’s elegant, woody pub in the Pearl is a year old now and they’ll close off part of Northwest Davis Street for a block party with a DJ, face-painting for the kids, and grilled burgers, brats and pulled pork sandwiches and Mirror Pond Pale Ale and Black Butte Porter for sale.

Indoors, of course, are 16 handles serving special Deschutes beers such as the new Red Chair IPA and many others.

The Timbers weren’t very good last year, but there were a few amazing moments.

Timber Jim retired after the first match last year. Here he is sawing his last log, for Chris Brown’s 71st minute winning goal.

April 30: Portland Timbers 2009 home opener

April 28, 2009 by Dave 2 Comments

TimbersWhew, it’s finally here. Opening day.

Thursday, April 30th the Timbers host the Carolina Railhawks at PGE Park, 7pm.

Last Saturday the Timbers opened their season on the road in Vancouver, BC. The Timbers lost for the zillionth time in BC result isn’t important – it was refreshing to see a Timbers midfield string together some passes and I do believe I witnessed a few shots directed in the right direction. Due to crappy internets at the coast, however, I only managed to watch maybe 30 choppy minutes of Saturday’s game. Luckily some folks had more success watching than I did – the 100 plus Timbers fans who made the trip to Vancouver, the packed Beulahland, and these guys:

With all the MLS to Portland excitement and controversy, this past offseason was more exhausting than most years. And despite the prognosticators’ optimism, the Timbers finished bottom of the table last year. The team, advisably, made a lot of changes on the field for 2009. I did not watch any of the preseason matches this year, and as I mentioned above I didn’t get to see much of the season opener, so Thursday will be my introduction to the 2009 team. Here are the starters from Saturday’s game (via Mark Evans’ match report):

Keeper
Cronin
Defense
Nishimura, Knowles, Keel, Hayes
